Do a search for 9x18 Makarov ammunition on any search engine and you should come up with a lot of hits.

DO NOT USE 9mm MAKAROV ammo in your gun. the bore diameter is different.

your gun uses 9mm ultra ammunition. no idea where to find it.

You may want to try the old western scrounger. I'm sure there are sources for this cartridge, which isn't all that old. Neat gun, but tough-to-find ammo chills the thrill a bit.

(added later) Sorry, if they've got it it's well hidden. GECO made the ammo but you'll have to hit some auctions and pay major prices unless you happen onto something. Someone on another board recommended a replacement barrel in .380 or .32 from Numrich arms. There is no interchangeable round, and that may explain why the PP Super isn't common these days.

A guy I knew back in South Africa had a gun chambered in Walther 9x18. He could never find ammo for it, but got good results by shortening 9x19 cases to 9x18 and reloading. He also found that he could shoot .380 ACP ammo, relying on the extractor to hold the cartridge against the breechface - but I don't recommend this, for obvious reasons of safety. I suspect reloading with shortened cases will be the way to go (or you could talk to a specialty ammo loader, such as our own WESHOOT, to have them load 500 or 1,000 rounds for you - but if they have to shorten the cases as well, the cost will be very high, I'm afraid).

IIRC, 9mm Ultra ammo was loaded as a police-only round in Germany. The theory was, if an officer's gun was stolen, the BGs would not be able to get ammo for it except what was in it at the time. Same theory as the 14-ga Egyptian "police-only" shotgun.

Your friend should sell the gun to a collector and buy something that shoots readly available ammo. Walther 9x18 is scarce and pricey.

First, I'd like to second the idea of selling or trading it for a handgun of a more popular, readily available caliber.

However, your friend is in luck...

Found in their November 2004 catalog, SOG International Inc (www.southernohiogun.com) is offering brass-cased boxer-primed 94gr flatnose FMJ Dynamit-Noble 9x18 Ultra ammunition at the very reasonable price of $8.95/50 (Item # AMO-9x18M).
Georgia Arms offers Fiocchi 100gr FMJ 9mm Ultra, but at more than twice the price.

Have your friend give them a call (1-800-944-4867) ASAP as it's unlikely anyone will ever find quality 9x18 Ultra ammunition at this price.

If he plans on keeping the Walther, tell him to stock up. ;)

Man, for that price, I'm thinking about buying a couple boxes of 9x18mm Ultra, just in case I ever find a gun in that caliber.

My favorite round is the 9x18 Ultra(or Police). I have three pistols chambered for it. Walther PP Super, Benelli B80 and Sig P230. :banghead:

SOG is a regular importer of the Geco 9x18U cartridge. Have purchased it within the last year(+-) for $5.50/50(+-). Believe that the present $8.00 price is due to the increasing availability of PP Supers and the need to feed them. Stock up while you can. But other dealers have it for a higher price, e.g., Reed's Ammo & Research, OKC, OK. ;)

Fiocchi (9x18P) makes a hotter round than Geco. :fire: http://www.allaboutfishing.com/store/ammunition/productDisplay~FIOCCHI~CENTERFIRE+SPECIALTY+AMMO~productID~293842.htm
Price rise is significant. Italian made, not American.

Hirtenberger 9x18P is the hottest round of all three. Only one person in the CONUS imports it. And I keep it a closely-guarded secret. Sorry! :cuss:

FWIW, you can make 9mm Makarov cases from 9mm Parabellum cases, but not 9x18 Ultra. The Ultra case is too small and neither 9mm Makarov or cut down 9mm Parabellum cases will chamber in a PP Super.

For practicality, trading for a gun using a more common ammo would be OK, but the Walther PP Super is pretty rare and I expect to see them increase substantially in value.

Please allow me to correct my previous post. On or about October 2003, I purchased Geco 9x18U from SOG for $9.95/50.

The $5.50/50(+ -) figure that I gave was for an earlier time. Can't remember exactly when.

Do not let any one tell you to shoot 9x18 makarov in your gun or .380. I have a Walther PP Super and it takes 9x18 Ultra or Police and they are available at the Sportsmans Guide #15229 800 888 3006; They are on backorder for a while now .I bought a box and they shoot fine . I have to wait for some more to come in too. Weasle 94

It won't chamber. Can't do it. Physical impossibility.
