Dad and I went hunting today. We were in a spot where we had seen a grouse last year. Nothing happened the first half hour we were out there. Then Dad went down a small trail while I went parallel to him in the woods.
I had fallen behind a little bit. (My gun was pointing to my left, away from Dad, however, so that was good.) All of a sudden, from a bush next to me, WHOOSH! a grouse blasts out and away from me. Dad took a shot at it as it crossed the trail, but missed. I could've shot at it, but I'm glad I didn't. Being behind Dad as I was, that could've been very bad.
So we had an eventful (and safe) day in the woods on the last day of bird season until December. Deer season may officially take over now. :D

Well all I can say is this:
A day in the field without a catch is better than a day with a catch and a hurt partner.
This was the first grouse I managed to bring down this year... after about 3 or 4 trips out. The dog and I had probably flushed over a dozen before I had a decent shot.
Yeah, Trapper, it did. And sorry about no pics, but there wasn't really room for a camera...what with the shotguns and all...

LL - I admire you and your dad. Mine had given up hunting by the time I was born. He was a great dad, but it sure would have been great to build some memories in the field. As it is, I settle for using his Model 12 when I hunt for pheasants.

My Dad bought me a Model 12 in 16 gauge as a high school graduation present. I used it for grouse for years. One fall Dad and I hunted in and around a swamp in Menominee County, MI, and I shot a three point buck with the Model 12. We dragged it out together. That kill and drag is one of my favorite memories.
