HELP!! Trying to liberate handguns from the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia!!

I have a interesting predicament. My Dad is living in the PRK (Through no fault of his own. aka. USAF Stationed north of SF) And has decided that I should take a couple of his Handguns for safekeeping as he doesn't know where he's going next, and there is really nothing he can do with them where he is anyway. How can I get them back to America.
My first thought was to just drive there and put them in the trunk and drive back. I live in Nebraska and do not have to register new guns where I live.
Obviously I can't take them on the plane..(oh can I check them?) My other option is to go through a FFL. But I don't know whether these guns are in the system. Or if there is one.
Any advice??

If going from cali to nebraska, just load them up in a trunk, locked up separate from the ammo, and drive back to nebraska. California only cares when you bring them in, not when they leave. Bringing them back in will be expensive though.

Getting guns into the PRK isn't actually that hard. Getting them out is a piece of cake. Shoot, someone at the border will probably even thank you.
Easiest/cheapest way is to pick them up either driving or flying back with them as checked bagage (though if you don't have one you'll have to pony up and buy an airline approved case). If your dad ships them out, he has to us a FFL and the PRK rates FFL's charge is bordering on criminal.
As was said, just seperate ammo from the guns while in the PRK and you are fine for driving out.

I'm sure the guns will be happier in the United States.

I would guess they could use the exercise. Don't worry dad they'll be well taken care of and I promise they'll get to go to the range at least once a week. :)
