Adding a finish to an 870 stock/forend

Yesterday, I purchased a "Police Magnum" stock & forend for an 870 receiver. While the wood is not nearly as nice as my older Wingmaster's, the two pieces are new and unmarked.

Two questions : First, should I consider putting some sort of basic protective coating on the wood to keep it from drying out, cracking or becoming discolored (It will not be used for hunting)? Basically, to keep it in the best shape possible. Secondly, if I wanted to go a step further, any "simple for the non woodworker" recommendations for bringing out the very best in this lower grade wood? Thanks for any advice.

Mastinson,

Thanks for the info. Even though the wood is plain, i'd like to make them look as nice as possible. It's also better in court that way. :D
I picked up the Police set on www.ebay.com (type in Remington 870) for $35. plus shipping.
