1911s suck 1911s suck 1911s suck....

Ok I like 1911s but I shoot my Beretta better. I still owe my savings acct $2000 (pulled out of reserves for LASIK procedure early this year). I have a job interview on Thursday that might place me in Arizona so I should be saving up for rifles instead.
I went to the range and shot a few 1911s and against my better judgment I think I want one again.
The Sig GSR is right up my alley. It oozes with teutonic tacticality, and carbon fiber can be had for it. And best of all it's California approved which makes it not unsafe.
So please tell me 1911s suck.

Can't do - 'cause I'd be lying.
Still recall shooting my first Gov't model at age 6 (that would put it about '61) , Still shooting 'em , still prefer the Gov't model .
I never warmed up to spaghetti guns except the Jetfire in .25 or the Bobcat. Maybe that is why I turned out so well.
When you learn on the best - everything else pales in comparison. :D
I "learnt" to shoot on Old S&W Kframes and Gov't models of the 1911...I still prefer these and shoot these.
Since " I are" offically "Probationary Reprobate" now...I can say stuff like this now... :neener:
Who says nearing 50 is a bad thing?

Okay.
1911's suck.
Actually, 1911's don't suck if you don't shoot them a lot, or you enjoy performing regular maintenance that is unnecessary on most of the guns that are not 100 year-old designs. As a relic of days-gone-by, I find them amusing, and they certainly fit the niche of a fun gun, but I don't recommend them to people.
A Sig 1911 is just a strange beast. First, it's a single-action Sig. Isn't that an oxymoron? Secondly, Sigs work. They're as reliable as death. You run 20,000 rounds through them, perform no maintenance and they still work. This does not sound like a 1911. Maybe Sig will change my mind about 1911's and actually manufacture one that isn't a pain in the beavertail. They'd still have to get rid of the grip safety to make me really happy.

One of the guys at a league I shoot in says the same thing. He's a Sig guy, and we call his Sig his "Uber-reliable Sig."
Many, many rounds.
When it's in the shop, he borrows my milspec so he doesn't have to miss the course of fire.
If I ever have the bad luck to get into a gun fight, I hope my opponent has either a Sig or a Micro. :D

Can't tell ya that, dude. I've got a Springfield WWII repro that I love and wouldn't trade for anything. In a previous, foolish life, I sold my 92FS stainless (blasphemy, I know), and I'd love to have it back and plan to get another one soon. Still, you should own a 1911 even if it's only to tell people "I have one and can't stand it," which I don't think would be true.
That GSR is uber tactical-looking. Sigs have nice lines, and their quality is good. Go for it. Just don't put it on the shelf next to the Beretta, or they'll squabble. :D

I read of early problems in the SIG GSR, check around to make sure they've corrected them before you buy one.
Arizona is beautiful this time of year, it really can't be beat. To prepare for summer living, head down to your local pizza joint and spend some quality time in the oven.

If you're moving to the home of Jeff Cooper, you better get yourself a 1911! Wait til you move there and get a Series 70!
Now that you're getting older and more famous, I would suggest you dump the carbon fiber and move up to ivory for that 1911, but I don't know if it would like that AZ weather. A nice blued Series 70 with ivory would look more like a skunk though I say. :)

What is meant by 'performing flawlessly without maintenance'?
I rented a .40 cal Sig at my local range. The first shot I took with it stovepiped. Then it jammed. I took it apart, cleaned it with some Breakfree I had brought along, and it started working just fine. But it was not performing flawlessly without maintenance, if maintenance includes normal cleaning.

Sorry SkB but I'm selling my HK handguns and buying 1911s, they are JUST THAT TACTICAL!
Of course you shoot your Beretta better now. The question is, if you start shooting 1911s which will you shoot better a year from now?
(Whichever one you practice the most with probably.)

Come in to AZ! Lots of room for pro gun people, aboslutely full to LIEberals. Great gun laws, weird water laws, but a free place to live, as opposed to Cali. We have no registration/no licensing/no permit to carry open/shall issue fast turnaround CCW permit/no magazine limit/no number purchased limit/no AWB/ no waiting period,(15 minute instacheck, if you don't have a CCW)/ pre-emption law, so we all play the same rules/safe storage laws for public buildings/ gun shows...sound good so far? If you can't stand the heat, then Northern AZ plays by the exact same rules, and we do have some colder coutry up there, like Show Low, Flagstaff, Pinetop/Lakesude, etc. Come on in - the water's fine!
Or, get really cold and move up with Wildalaska. The cold ain't all just weather.....

They are highly variable. There are great ones. There are ones that suck. There is everything in between. I got a pre-ehanced Delta Elite. I occasionally have extraction issues with it other than that it's been a lot of fun. I got it mainly as a tinkering gun and it isn't my favorite. I almost traded it for a Glock 20 and 29 but the other guy vanished. I've since decided I'm glad he did.
If I wanted a tacticool 45 it would be the USP Tacticool. Carbon fiber for them is harder to come by though. ;) For my first 45 ACP I'll be getting a moon clip revo. Specificly I'm tracking down a Taurus 445SH4 Titanium model. Titanium is almost as tacticool as carbon fiber :D

Yup, and besides, as soon as you step out of the car and walk into a Circle K or Seven Eleven, you are gunna be branded a snowbird!!!
Seriously, you will have a period of adjustment. Living in freedom takes getting used to. Kinda like the emigrants that came here from behind the Iron Curtain!!
Don't get freaked out at the sight of someone carrying a gun openly in the grocery store!! No, he ain't gunna rob and shoot up the place!! He's just excercising his constitutional rights!!!
Don't get upset at the sight of ammunition on the shelf of the hardware store!!
Don't drool all over the counter at the sight of all those sub guns available for sale at the local gun shop!!
The sound of gunfire is NOT necessarilly a bad thing!!! People go shooting out in the desert all the time!!!
The concept of the government sponsored public shooting range may be foreign to you!!!
Above all, DON"T feed the Democrats!!!
We have two carefully planned and maintained preserves set up where they can live out their lives in their natural environment!!!! A brief perusal of the Arizona election results will be more than enough to show you where they live!!
Welcome to freedom!!! :D

But that may not be YOUR opinion.
Skunk, dude, you love you Beretta's, you practice with them, you shoot them well, you train with them, they fit you, they have carbon fiber already on them....why do you feel the need to change? Pick a platform and stick with it.

Remember: Beware the man that shoots one gun..
Besides , Skunk is in CA, they don't do "real" BBQ's in CA ...so Carbon Fiber is cool... [ J/K ]
NOW head to TX for a REAL BBQ , BBQ guns don't have metric designations- Calibers do start with the numeral "4" , NO carbon fiber - Real Ivory on them stocks.
Impression from some folks I talked to in AZ , they follow a similar "Etiquette" -
Neither TX or AZ allows one to trade a CRV toward a Horse , that is a hanging offense. :neener:

I got a thought for you - how come we NEVER hear of pax changing calibers, platforms or holsters. She continues to use what works for her - no matter what anyone thinks.

Yes. No. http://www.azleg.state.az.us/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/13/03102.htm&Title=13&DocType=ARS
Welcome to Free AZ! As long as it is visible, it is good. If it is not visible, it needs to be in a "case, holster, scabbard, pack or luggage that is carried within a means of transportation or within a storage compartment, trunk or glove compartment of a means of transportation." Ta Da!

I agree....
A firearms instructor/ shooting buddy, who happens to be a cop told me.....SHOOT WHAT YOU SHOOT WELL! I love 1911s and shoot them well, same with HPs, if you like the Beretta just keep shooting it, having shot a few 92s you couldn't give one to me! I have never found the need or a reason to use anything but the slabsides, they have always been functional, reliable 100%, shootable, accurate.... besides they are CLASSY!!!

I have owned several 1911's over the years and have never really warmed up to them. Recently I was at my local gun shop and they had a used Springfield TRP Operator for sale complete with Surefire light for a good price. After a little arm twisting I purchased it. All of a sudden I love 1911's. I can't explain it I find that I am now taking a 1911 or my BHP every time I go to the range.
Oh by the way I got a GSR, 300+ rounds without a problem. All I have done is cleaned it and changed the grips.
Long story short? Be careful when the 1911 bug bites it bites bad...

But more importantly didn't the FBI choose Springy 1911s and LAPD choose Kimber 1911s?
Who has had more real-world shootin' "events"? Has the Fed DHS been fighing it out in the streets with Islamic terrorists with the SIG? No.
(Thank you, GWB and administration and footsoldiers.)
I bet the LAPD and FBI have years more experience, and know what they want because it works......
Makes me think the 1911 is argueably on the top of the Gold Medal platform. Even it it sometimes has to share that stand with a European entry, depending on who you listen to.

Tinkering is not required for proper functioning. In fact, many argue that tinkering is often the cause of many of the reliability issues we hear about. My Kimber has been flawless out of the box. I recently changed the grips and MSH, but neither have anything to do with functioning, just personal preference.

Well,,,,I'll just have to do my best then by firing 1,000s and 1,000s of rounds through them! I don't think I have enough years left to properly do those awful 1911s in, but I'd sure like to try!
On another note, I prefer my 1911s as they are out of the box. The biggest reason the Colt Commander I bought used was horribly unreliable was because it had been "customized".
I don't have any need at all to customize my 1911s, they're working fine.
