Ok, I've searched the forum and I'm not sure if it's my ignorance of the search function or if there isn't anything in this forum, but here goes.

Does anyone have any load data for the .50 S&W? I'm not looking for heavy loads but primarily for loads that replicate the factory loadings from say Corbon and Hornady.

Any and all info is appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

I take it you mean the 500 S&W. Go to the Hornady web site. Plenty enough there to keep you at the bench all day long. :D

Peter Pi sent me Corbons data when they first came out with the 500 S&W.

500 S&W data (http://www.handloads.com/loaddata/default.asp?Caliber=500%20SqqqW%20Magnum&Weight=All&type=Handgun&Order=Powder&Source=Corbon)

Corbons factory loads aren't exactly light though. :)

That's great. I hadn't seen those. Even the stuff I found on Hodgdon's site seemed pretty stiff on the "starting" loads. I'd imagine that if you go too light you end up with problems wrt to excessive airspace in the cartridge?

Dave

I haven't loaded for the 500 so I don't have any first hand experience with it, but people download the 45-70 quite a ways and that's a much larger cartridge than the 500 Smith. John Taffin listed some light loads in American Handgunner. Of course some people wouldn't consider a 440gr bullet at nearly 1,000 fps all that light. :)

440gr LBT 15.0 gr HS 6 984 fps
Bullet: CPBC 440 GC
FIREARM: S&W M500 8 3/8"
Primer: CCI 350

440gr LBT 10.0 gr Unique 882 fps
Bullet: CPBC 440 GC
FIREARM: S&W M500 8 3/8"
Primer: CCI 350

440gr LBT 10.0 gr Win 231 827 fps
Bullet: CPBC 440 GC
FIREARM: S&W M500 8 3/8"
Primer: CCI 350

370gr LBT 10.0 gr Unique 859 fps
Bullet: CPBC 370 GC
FIREARM: S&W M500 8 3/8"
Primer: CCI 350

:) Thanks! I would imagine those would shoot real nicely. I tried some 325 grain bullets at 1325 fps and they didn't induce flinch at all. (the gun is really heavy).

I'm all set for my first batch of 100 . . .I calculated the cost of the 100 vs. what I was paying for the Hornady loads and it looks like I'm going to recoup some of my investment pretty quickly.

Avg. Price of the 100 rounds of Hornady 350XTP that I bought = $200 ($40 a box by the time you include s/h taxes, etc)

Price for Primers, Powder, and Bullets to reload the 100 rounds = $32

Spending time in the garage and avoiding the inlaws . . priceless. :) :)

Gotta love it!
