Inspired by Holywood

A current thread discusses the idea of the firearms industry using product placement in films. I admit, at least to my mind, the idea has merit. I'll never forget the scene in "48 Hours" with Eddie Murphy running down an alley, holding up a Smith Model 19 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel, backlit, so you could see the outline of the revolver very clearly. I lusted after that gun until I made the purchase. And, currently, after watching "In the Line of Fire," I am saving to purchase a Sig 228/229. So, I ask you THR members: have you been inspired in a gun purchase by what you may have seen on the screne, be it film or television? If so, what did you buy and why?

After seeing Collateral this summer, I purchased a HK USPC. It wasn't a particular scene or a particular character that convinced me, rather it made me aware of the gun's existence. After seeing it on-screen I did a little homework to find out info, pricing, performance, talked to some current owners to see if they were happy with the product. Then I bought.
So while I didn't "rush out," I wouldn't exactly say I was inspired either. The research that I uncover while considering what to by, and being able to test the model in question for comfort, relability, etc, is what matters the most.
And c'mon, I know more people have done something similar, don't be embarassed about posting. Afterall, you have to hear about or see a firearm somewhere first. Movie's as good a place as any.

John Woo/Chow Yun Fat movies make me want a pair of 9mm pistols.
Blackhawk Down makes me want a M14.
Enemy at the Gates makes me want a Mauser.
Saving Private Ryan makes me want a Garand, a Thompson, a BAR, a Springfield bolt action, and a P-51.
The Dark Tower books make me want a 7 1/2 in. Blackhawk in .45 LC.

best* guns i've ever seen in film were the ones in Romeo and Juliet
however, the only gun i've really ever lusted for after seeing it in a movie HAS to be the G.E. minigun in _Predator_
btw, that line about being a "sexual tyranasaurus" was single-handedly responsible for getting him the governorship of MN

Man, that movie has some crazy pimped out pistols...personally I'm not into the flashy stuff, but they did have some jazzy sidearms, I must admit. The nickel-plated Berettas of the Montagues were neat.

Me: "Lethal Weapon" made me want to buy a Beretta 92, join LAPD, and smoke Winston cigarettes.
You: How'd that work out for you?
Me: I smoked a lot of Winstons.
SWMBO joined LAPD and was issued a 92, but then she stole my G19. :(

i'm pretty sure that james bond had very little to do with my buying a walther PPK, smith 642, hk P7 or walther P99.
but i blame mel gibson for inspiring me to CCW my beretta and chow yun fat, and john woo, for making me want a 2nd one

Went and bought a supressor for my Beretta 21-A after watching "the Cleaner, Harvey Keitel" in the movie Point of No Return.

Anybody who didn't watch Band of Brothers and then immediately go buy a Garand was probably rooting for the dirty Jerries. :scrutiny:

Only once. When I saw the film "Broken Arrow" I really liked the Smith&Wesson Model 66 revolver that Christian Slater used, but upon handling a specimen at my local gun shop I decided against making a purchase. (Fixed sights suit me better for some reason)

Watching all those Steven Segal movies as a kid made me want a 1911 really bad.
And "Black Hawk Down" inspired me to get a M1A, though its not a real M14 :D

I used to work for a company that made beauty salon equipment. Long story. However, they had a guy in Hollywood and his job was to have our equipment in scenes that were in salons. It was kind of neat to look and see your stuff on the silver screen or on TV.

I dont think so. Maybe all the Segal flicks I saw as a kid influenced my taste in handguns. Mom has said when I was young I could recognize tommyguns on TV, maybe thats why I bought one about 20 years later.
Most of the guns I would buy because I saw them in a movie are forbidden or too expensive for me anyway. I dont like glocks, however would love to have a G18 (and the coat Morpheus wore, not to mention the lincoln, and the firebird). Someone mentioned Broken Arrow, I wouldnt mind having a 93R.
The closest I think I would get to buying a gun because of a movie would be twin parkerized 1911s (Last Man Standing), but I like 1911s anyway. So far I havent had the urge to go out and buy a matching pair, despite owning the DVD.
Maybe watching DOTD got a boot to my rear to make me replace the shotgun I traded in. I think I had it ordered before I saw it, I dont know without digging up the BOS.

Bond--PPK/S, and since they have both changed, I've been disappointed in them!

I saw that SPAS 12 and had to have one, for it's time it was a nice piece. Wish I would've kept it but the Benelli M3 that I have now is a better shotgun.

I've been looking for a lightsaber ever since I first saw A New Hope. They need to hurry up and make one.
Every type of gun I own has been in a movie at some point, but I've never bought one because of a movie.

I must confess that my very first pistol was influenced by what I saw on TV and in the movies. 10 years later I still have that Glock and although it's a good gun, knowing what I know now, I don't think I'll buy another.
My love of history inspires more gun purchases then just about anything. I didn't want an 1903 Springfield, for example, because of the M1903A4 in the story Saving Private Ryan so much as I wanted one because it has a story of it's own behind it. A real story probably much more compelling then any Hollywood movie. A story I'll never know the details of but sometimes I think I can feel it when I hold it in my hands. :)

OK, I have a confession, too. When I was in high school, "Die Hard" made me want a Beretta 92 very, very badly. So I researched and saved, and when I could, I bought one. I sold it off many moons later, and it's probably the gun I miss the most. I'm still planning to get another one, especially considering I can now get standard-capacity mags for it without getting screwed.

Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan made me want a Garand, bad. Also gave me a hankerin' for a Thompson SMG, but thanks to the MG ban, it's a wee bit outta my price range.

I can't believe it!
All this about movie guns and NOBODY has said that they got a .45 Colt SAA because of Cowboy movies.
Roy Rogers, Hopalong, The Lone Ranger, Paladin, the Duke... and so many more.
Are they really that far back in the past? I still want a pair of hoglegs, slung low & tied down, but haven't got them (yet.)
Guess there aren't many places I could wear them tho, these days. More's the pity, it was safer then when a lot of guys were packin'!

If you think those are good, have you seen the matching set in Face/Off?
Theyre too purdy for my taste. Mine are always dirty, theyve got a few scratches, ect. Typical carry wear. If I were to scratch a gold-plated pistol I dont think I could forgive myself.
Dont get me w2rong though, if you were to offer me twin gold-plated SA V10s for free or at a price that makes me wonder if theyre stolen, I'd be happy to accept (with a bill of sale of course), however they're not something I'm going to lust after.
Also gave me a hankerin' for a Thompson SMG, but thanks to the MG ban, it's a wee bit outta my price range.
You could always pick up one of the PC'ed versions.

Let's see. I bought my first black powder revolver after "Outlaw Josey Wales". Bought a .45 after seeing "The Shadow". (No, not the '94 Alec Baldwin version. Though, I can't decide if that one was a complete piece of c*@p or just a misunderstood piece of... Still, the twin 7" chrome .45's were sort of cool.)
A friend absolutely pimped up his CZ after Romeo and Juliet came out.
Can't decide/remember if it was "Breaker Morant" or "Gallipoli" that made me decide to get a SMLE.
"She Who Must Be Obeyed" has pretty much cut my movie rations since then.

John Wayne pictures have me wanting a short-barreled '92 Wichester. I bought a Rossi 16" Puma a years ago, but it would'nt feed reliably so I sold it. I definitely have my eyes open for an original '92 that I can afford.

Quigley Down Under made me want a Sharps buffalo gun.
I've wanted a pair of Walker Colts since I first saw The Outlaw Josey Wales.
I have not ponied up the money for either. Oh well. Maybe one day reality will stop getting in the way. ;)
