Quote button?

Did you guys take away the quote button?
That was the single best thing about the update!
It makes the flow of a thread much smoother, because it allows you to put the piece of text you're responding to right in your reply. Its a pain to do it manually, and when done manually it doesn't include who wrote the original text.

You can enter the author's name manually. Example: quote=CannibalCrowley
Just put it in brackets and you're good to go (just switch out the user names of course).
That said, I did like the quote button for ease of use. However, it can lead to people requoting an entire post when they only needed a small portion.

Yeah, you can enter a quote and the original author manually, but the quote button is MUCH better. I agree with 10 Ring, the quote button is the only thing (from this user's perspective) that made the upgrade worthwhile, and now it has been taken away.
I think people simply need to be instructed/reminded that when they use it they should delete the portions of the quoted post that aren't important, and leave only the part they wish to emphasize and/or talk about. It's working well on several other forums that use this same software, but we were so far behind the curve with the old version here that it may take people awhile to catch on.

This is exactly why the quote button was killed.

That was the single best thing about the update!I strongly disagree. That was the single worst and most abused feechur brought back by the upgrade.Admin -- PLEASE BRING BACK THE QUOTE BUTTONNot a chance - see above.
By the way, I had zero problems and exerted very little effort quoting from two different posts. There is more effort involved in deleting unwanted text from a "reply with quote". More effort means it is rarely done. That is simply human nature and we can't change that by dictum or any overlooked or ignored instructions.

I'm glad to see the quote button gone. I had noticed an overabundance of quoting lately.
Now just bring back the old color scheme and the old rolleyes emoticon. ;)

I find it much easier to see who is responding but I can understand why you killed it.
Back Notepad, Ctrl C, and Ctrl V ;)

Yeah, but you cheated. You didn't include the name of the person who posted that text you quoted, which saves you both having to remember their screen name, and having to type it. The quote button enters it automatically. If you're going to fully replicate what the quote button does, I'm afraid Ihave to disagree with you regarding which method is less work. I'm on enough other forums where it is enabled to know that doing it manually is more work. If this way was easier I wouldn't have asked for the quote button to come back.
Y'all seem to have your minds pretty firmly made up, but if it's so bloody terrible ... why does it work so well on all the other forums that use it?

I never understood the argument against the quote button either. I know the mods here seem dead set against it, but I've always found the "we can't let you have it, because someone might abuse it" argument to be extremely ironic.
It's much more difficult to include the original poster's name when manually doing quotes.
I also thought the quote button was the best thing about the upgrade.

"we can't let you have it, because someone might abuse it"
I think a better analogy is that the government won't give you a machinegun just because you have the right to own them. You can still get one if you want it; it just takes a bit more effort and money. Of course, the government has set up some unreasonable and unlawful roadblocks to such acquisitions.
THR does not put any roadblocks in the way of quoting as much as you want. You need no special tax stamp, and you certainly don't need $200...
... though that's not a bad idea. Anyone who wants to quote more than 500 words needs a permit as of now. Send $200 certified checks or money orders to...
... there is an amnesty period of 30 days during which you can pay $100 in back-taxes per post or contact THR to have your prior excessive quotations deleted. If you do not contact THR in one way or another within 30 days, you will receive a visit from the THR Bureau of Quotations...

Count me as someone who misses the quote button feature.
I can understand not wanting people to abuse it but, when used properly it is very handy.
The quote button is just a tool - it can be used for good or evil.

Count me as someone who misses the quote button feature.
First, I wanted to try to learn the new method. Second, add me to the list of folks wishing the little do-it-for-you button was available!
I was going to start a thread like this, only to find one in progress.
But, OTOH, if not having the button keeps the folks from quoting who couldn't figure out they should be pruning their quotes to only the pertinent points, because now they can't figure out how to quote at all - - - then maybe it's not a bad idea! That is a pet peeve of mine in the same vein as those on email lists that respond to a post by reposting the entire previous post, instead of just the pertinent points. Both are a nuisance.

There isn't much sense in debating this issue.
NoBite has reiterated our pet peeve: those ...that respond to a post by reposting the entire previous post, instead of just the pertinent points. That habit (and it is a habit for many members) is not only annoying it is a waste of both bandwidth and more importantly disk space - disk space that can never be recovered since the extra quoted material becomes part of the permanent record. Multiply the misuse of that one button over a day's time by the longevity of THR and you have a huge waste of space.
