First let me say: I have a rambling mind that comes up with a new toy I need every few days. RIght now I am interested in the 74 among other things.

I do have a couple questions on availability about them.

1. How easy is the 5.45 round to find? I know the 7.62 is everywhere and many commercial manufactuers are producing it.

2. How easy are magazines to find? How do their prices compare to an 47 mag prices.

Thanks

If you consider mail order, the AK74 pattern is almost identical in terms of availability of magazines and ammunition. Buy a bunch of the plastic Eastern Block magazines and don't look back. For ammo, it's a little more expensive but you get less recoil out of that. I'd say it's a good way to go if you don't already have an SKS or AR-15, otherwise I'd stick with one caliber. They are pretty-much interchangeable plinking calibers. If you want to do serious target work, you'd be avoiding the AK anyhow. If you ever intend to use the guns for hunting, the 30 caliber would be the way to go.

I do have a SKS and am getting an AR in the next few months. I was looking into the AK as mainly a plinker and just to own a lil piece of arms history.

In that case, I'd have to advise the 7.62x39. There really isn't THAT much difference between the AK-74 and the AKM besides caliber, the magazine, and the muzzle device. If you end up getting the 7.62 version, I'd still try to get some of the plastic magazines. The metal ones are heavier and have sharp edges that tear you up after 2-3,000 rounds of loading. One other thing, get the LULA loader to save time. It's quick and won't tear up your fingers.

The 5.45mm round is much more accurate in the AK than the 7.62X39mm from all I've heard by people who are A. good shots and B. shot both extensively.
