Blued scope/stainless rifle?

I know that this is a matter of personal aesthetics, but I am considering buying a Savage 12 Varminter Low Profile which is a stainless rifle. I already have a blued Leuopold scope so I was going to match them up. However, I'm not sure how a blued scope on a stainless rifle would look. Also, would I use stainless or blued rings, matte or gloss? As I said, I realize these are minor matters compared to whether the thing will shoot or not, but the looks of my firearms are important to me, too. Anyone have this problem and how did you solve it? Thanks! :D

I don't think it will look bad at all. Does that rifle have a synthetic stock? The blue scope might match up with the stock and look just fine. Then again, I'm not a 'purist' and much prefer function over form.

I put my blued Leupold on my Stainless Tikka. I did not want to purchase a new scope for this rifle. I actually like the way it looks.

RileyMc: the Varminter has a laminate wood stock -- very pretty. Charles: did you use blued or stainless rings? Thanks to both for your responses!

I used the stainless rings that were supplied with the Tikka. I really don't think it is necessary to buy a new scope, but it is a good excuse if you just want one.

I have an older Savage 112 in a 7 Rem Mag. Great beanfield gun but way too heavy to carry around. I put a matte blue scope and rings on it and it looks fine.
Personally, I don't mind a stainless gun/blue ring and scope combo. I do not care for the all stainless look but they look fine to most people. What does look horrible to me is the stainless rings and blue scope look, or vice versa. With the rings a different color than the scope it breaks up the lines.

While a stainless scope on a blued rifle looks weird to me, a blued scope on a stainless rifle looks good IMO. Silver optics look weird to me anyway...

I agree with some others. Don't like stainless rings on blue or black scope. Or vice versa. Otherwise, I rather like a black stock, stainless barrel and receiver, with a black scope topping it off.

Actually if I like the rifle, and scope any combo is fine.

Further, have owned a Springfield M1a with nice walnut stock, blued(actually parkerized) receiver and stainless barrel. And own a Cooper with really, really nice walnut, blued receiver and stainless barrel. Have a black matte scope and rings on that Cooper. Both came this way from the respective factory.

I have a Savage Model 16 (stainless with black synthetic stock) with matte blue steel rings and matte blue scope on top of a 4 screw one piece silver weaver base (B-Square). I think it looks great - I chose the rings and scope finish to match both each other and the stock. The base matches the rifle. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree with previous post that all silver finish on a stainless weapon looks strange. Match your rings and scope.

1. Match you rings with your scope.
2. Match your shoes with your belt.
3. Match your socks with your shirt.

Go to They have a picture gallery of board member's rifles. It is a good way to see what different rifles look and what the scopes look like on them.

R.D.: I like the idea of the silver base with blue rings and scope. That would be a good solution. Mike 128: thanks for the link! There are some great pictures there of just the situation I'm describing. Thanks to all for your help!!

Black scopes on a stainless gun look particularly good with a black synthetic stock, IMHO.
