I have owned an XD for a total of two weeks now and have cleaned and fired it once.

Talking to my brother last night, who just bought a Glock. He was told by the armorer at the store that you lube modern handguns little to almost none, especially poly framed ones.

Now that makes some sense, the "modern" part, but as I examine my XD the slide is still running on metal rails, the fire control mechanism is still metal touching metal, and so on for other internal parts.

It seems to me that a thin film of oil should be on the rails and any other moving parts be it a 2003 XD or a 1903 Colt.

My manual says to oil very lightly.

What is your interpretation of "very lightly"?

When i oil my G21 or Hi-Point, i just put a couple drops of oil on a .22lr patch and wipe it over the frame rails a couple of times.I then oil any other place that requires it like the Glock manual says.Hi-Point requires a drop here or there in other places than the Glock.Check your manual.;)

See what your owner's manual says re: lubrication. I normally do the wipe down w/ a patch & a couple of drops of militec on my guns. Then after assembly, I'll wipe thoroughly w/ silicon cloth.

Light = one drop of oil on all parts were metal touch. ie high friction areas.

Gonna be getting a Glock soon. What do you use for solvent? Is it safe to use brake cleaners or bore solvents, say if some got on the poly frame?

On a polymer pistol, do not use an oil based oil. haha! seriously, use a synthetic teflon based oil. petroleum will soften the plastic. On the rear of the XD frame, use a synthetic grease!! Slide does ride on the plastic back there!!!:)
