Finnish newspaper article (http://www.hameensanomat.fi/Article.jsp?article=7168)

At close to 80 years of age, an old timer in central Finland got a working model of his belt-fed .22 finished after continuous prototyping since the late 1970's. A theoretical rate of fire of 420 shots per minute and a prompt arrest were achieved.

The man tested the prototype, found it working and went to the police station with a photo of the thing in order to obtain a licence. Well, full auto isn't that simply licenced even here, plus that he'd already built the thing unlicenced, thus breaking the law.

The court let Gramps go unpunished yesterday judging that he wasn't aware that building the gun was illegal as such. He did know and admit that having the result and shooting it without a licence was not allowed. So no jail for the innovator but the weapon was confiscated. It will be put in the collection of the crime laboratory museum.

The gun found its inspiration in the Gatling design although it was built with a single barrel. The police described it as "complicated with many moving parts but very well working".

That ingnorance of the law being no excuse saying was a good idea way back when there were fewer laws because there was no excuse for ignorance of something so simple. Now that we have enough ever changing laws to fill the Library of Congress there is no excuse for oppressing people where no conscious decision to excercise criminal intent was involved. I feel that if the government is going to play games with people's freedom then it should be their duty to ensure everyone has been informed.

I'm glad to hear the guy is ok but more than likely it was out of deference to his age. I've seen these blue hairs get away with homicide. Neat gun :)
