have any of you ever installed & used a williams WGRS peep sight on a 45-70 NEF handi rifle ? were you able to use the original factory front sight then? can the factory rear sight be left on without problems? any thoughts on this will be appreciated. thanks

I have a Williams Guide rear peep sight on my NEF HandiRifle in .45-70. It's a good rear sight.

My experience with the rear peep sight with the factory front sight is the front won't be tall enough. Mine is shooting 12-15" high at 50yds. I'm fixing to put a Lyman ramp and possibly a 17A front globe sight on mine.

As to leaving the original factory rear sight on the barrel while having the peep sight installed, I don't know as I removed mine. Tell you what, put the Williams peep sight on your rifle, look through it and see if you can see your whole front sight with the original rear in place. If you can't, remove the original because you won't be able to get the most from your peep sight.

mustanger, thanks for the info. i presume your peep sight was as low as you could set it and still shot that high ?

Yeah, it was set at the lowest tick mark. I assume that's as low as it's supposed to go. You can set it lower than that, but then you won't know what you're doing when it comes time to make adjustements.

What I'm fixing to do is order a dovetailed ramp from Midway and have my preferred gunsmith mount it, then figure out which height blade I'll need for 100yds on the lowest tick mark.

I mentioned using a Lyman 17A on it, but I got to talking with a guy who got into those and he said 17A's have three different height bases and if you don't know which one you need, it'll run you up a bill.
