AK-47 building

I was looking at Sportsman's Guide and they have Russian AK kits for $150 or so. That got me wondering about building a receiver from a blank. Just how much of a PITA would that be?

I'm also wondering if that's a good price and which blanks are the good ones.

Very interesting topic. Sounds like fun. I plead for people to post their experiences with building from parts both the AK and the AR. Where can one get an AK receiver which the Sportmans kit lacks? I know there are lots of different AR receivers available. My plate is full right now but this would be great fun.

it would be good to here other posters information on this also.there are several companies that have receivers for these, only one comes to mind right now, ohio ordinance i think thats it.i don't think i would want to try to bend up the recever flat thats out there, but i don't use a metal brake that much.for me it would have to be the starter kit with the rails in place and bent up.they have the holes punched for the trunions so locating them is done all you have to do is make sure it's plumb and square and than rivet it up.after i finish my bullpup ak i am thinking of building one up from a kit instead of cutting and welding something into shape,at least it should be easier.

I picked up an AMD-65 kit from Interordnance. The receiver I ordered is from Global Trades. It's a bit thicker so the trunions (both front and rear) need to be shaved about 3mm on each side to work. But it's already heat treated and predrilled (execpt the front trunion). I intend to do a screw build as opposed to riviting since it will save me pressing out the barrel and then having to reinstall, headspace, etc. If you are halfway decent with tools, you can do one. I'm just waiting for the day my FFL guy and I can do the transfer of the receiver. You can order blanks fro TAPCO to bend your own receiver, or get 80%'ers from a few other places. They will need to be heat treated and drilled (the 80%'ers) but with a drill press and a MAPP torch, it doesn't look too bad...

Try these sites for home build info...

Hope this helpes..........

I got a video that steps thru every aspect of the process. It was, if I remember right, I'm not at home so I'm going from memory. I believe it was Greyman.com or something there abouts.

good luck

I am working on building an AMD and I have seen from many forums that the Russians from SG are
1) Milled receivers (you don't want to start out with those ones) and
2) Pretty rough. Rust, etc.
