What are flyers caused by other than operator error? It seems that on more occiasons than not, I'll put 4 shots from my .223 into a 1/4 inch hole only to have a fifth a 1/2 inch off the rest. Sure spoils an otherwide pretty picture.

Tha'ts why you shoot 3 rnd groups - stop while you are ahead! :D

You will see this if the bedding is loose. Or cheap bullets - don't scrimp on these if you want the best accuracy.

With my .223 I just decreased the velocity a little bit and the flyers went away.

Well, if it isn't operator error...then it could be the first shot from a cold, clean bore is impacting away from the rest of the shots out of a warm, fouled bore. Or it is just the realistic accuracy potential of the rifle/ammo.

dont' rule out operator error :)

i do the same thing. i've got lots and lots of 100yrd targets with 4 shots in a ragged hole and 1 shot 1/2 inch away. i usually choke on #4. i have no idea why. at least i can show my wife that i really do need more practice, no really, honest :)

the curios thing is that out of all those targets, the fliers aren't consistently horizontal or verticle. they're randomly distributed in all directions. so it's not like i'm mashing every one, or breathing wrong, or holding wrong etc. just a little bit of slop everywhere. or maybe it really is the ammo.

did this with my Savage 223. the flyer was the 5th shot.

should've taken Dave P's advice!

Mr. Nipprdog:
You must shoot at the same range I do. That group looks exactly like what I'm talking about.

shoot 10 shot groups, I do  Then I KNOW its me and not the gun or ammo...With my accurate guns I often put 8 or 9 into one hole, then I :cuss: blow it. I can usually call the flyers, too. Pi$$es me off. ONCE I actually put all 10 in one hole.

But seriously folks, if its not the shooter, it often the ammo. I've often had shots that didn't "sound" right (especially w/ .22s) and resulted in a flyer.

And of course, the barrel heating up will do it, too.

What kind of rifle are we talking about here and what has been done to it?
