I am a resident of California and am interested in a pre model 27 Smith and Wesson with a serial number "S 78xxx" something or other. The seller assures me it was made in 1950.

I'm confused because the BATF book says ".357 magnum hand ejector, s/n 45768 to 60000 with NO letter." That's the only reference I can find, other than a registered magnum, to the gun.

I'm in California. I've talked to the BATF. I also talked to the DOJ. As near as I can tell, it's up to my local dealer to make the determination, cause if he fills out the c&r exemption list, the Cal DOJ doesn't investigate the gun.

So what is adequate verification? The seller's word? Do I need a letter from Smith?

thanx in advance.

That gun was made in 1950-51, is C&R eligible, and is legal to import into CA.
