Iraqi Soldiers Ready to Surrender

There are lots of jokes about French soldiers carrying white flags with them, but now it's the Iraqi troops who are preparing to surrender.

"Morale is low in the Iraqi army and many soldiers are preparing white flags of surrender, we are told by someone in northern Iraq who recently interviewed two defectors from Saddam Hussein's army," the Washington Times reported today.

One, a captain who defected from the 5th Mechanized Division of the 1st Corps, based near the northern city of Kirkuk, said the heavy division was only 35 percent combat-effective. Morale is so low that younger soldiers speak openly about surrendering before a shot is fired, he said.

The second escapee, a senior noncommissioned officer, defected from the same division's 34th Brigade, based south of the northern city of Mosul. He said that only 6 of the 28 tanks in his care worked.

"He said the whole division was at about 25 percent effectiveness and most soldiers were hiding their white flags," said the Times' source.

Intelligence sources in northern Iraq, where CIA Special Operations Group officers and Army Special Forces are active, report dozens of defectors in recent weeks.

The folks in Baghdad, meanwhile, are still ignoring their dictator's order Wednesday to dig trenches in preparation for war, the Boston Globe reported today.

"Five years ago, people would come in and change at the slightest hint of fighting," a 25-year-old named Salman told the Globe. "Now we are used to this atmosphere."

If I was Saddam, I'd make sure all clothing was dyed black. Special gear will be installed to prevent arms from being raised higher than the mouth. Their non-removable chest high ammo pouches will be made to look like the suicide bomber gear favored by Hamas.

Face it, the common Iraqi has no quarrel with us. They remember all too well what happened a decade ago. They want to live in peace just like we do. Now, if they can overthrow their leader for us, we can live in peace together.

I hope they can surrender quick and safely enough. I'd hate to see thousands of them killed for someone as worthless as Saddam.

I hate to see as many friendly casualties as we had last time. I could care less about the civilian/military population; if things are such that they choose not to overthrow their oppressor themselves, they deserve whatever comes their way.:what:

LostOneToo, with all respect, I have to question your position.

Our own leaders have pretty much stripped us of most of the God-given freedoms reiterated by the BOR.

We have now reached the point where our tax policy takes nearly 50% of every dollar we earn. The radicals who started the Boston Tea Party were upset about a 15% rate.

Why do we endure this? Because the fight against it would be lonely and deadly--until some other folks came aboard.

I'm not defending Saddam. Just saying that it's not that easy for an oppressed people to rise up in the face of overwhelming force.

Surrender is easy...

I want to see how many Iraquis are willing to pick those guns back up, make a 180-degree turn, and attack their REAL enemy--Saddam Hussein...

The 180 spin happened in the early 90's during the attempted coup in the soviet union...

A tank commander was ordered to open fire on the russian white house. He consulted with his group, and they spun their turrets to DEFEND the newly elected government.

Sometimes, history turns on one man.

If he has a squadron of tanks, that helps too.

If I were an Iraqi solder I'd be working on my SHTF plan and bug out bag around the clock.

If there turns out to be a note of humor after the invasions starts it will be how quick the Iraqi military lead us to the piles of hidden WMD after the UN failed to find themafter months of looking. My guess is the first major find will be within the first day or two of action.

The Special Ops people we have on the ground there now may already have cut some deals. Bet they are looking.

The French and Germans will be silent on the matter after the stockpiles are found.
The Russinas will admit they were wrong.
Mandela will call us a country of genocidal madmen and slaveowners, as usual.

Must be terrible to be in a military facing war and think that the best outcome is to be defeated without your getting hurt.

Your bug-out plan would be simple in Baghdad-you won't have to worry about which weapons to take with you. You don't have any. Better get your camel some Air Jordanians so he can cover the ground a bit faster!
