If you live in Illinois, PLEASE keep an eye on Daley/ Blogo`s bills that are being presented soon! We`re looking at a complete ban on semi-autos with detachable mags and/or pistol grips, WITHOUT grandfather clauses! Please, if anyone is knowlegable about politics, (im not, but not for long!), let us know the appropriate local politicians, that should be contacted, to make the biggest impact on the killing of these bills!! Thanx in advance-

ex post facto means you cant punish someone for something they did before it became illegal (literally: 'after the fact'), like they couldnt change the DUI limit to be 0.06% and then send out warrents for everyone thats ever blown a 0.06 or higher in the last 20 years.

Gotcha, thanks. I heard that this is one of those bills, though, that would make you a felon if you didnt hand over, or destroy your weapons immediatly (or in a certain time frame). This bill has me worried, and I believe with our new left wing Gov., and others, we`re in for a ride!

On other threads and other web sites gun owners have talked about fleeing the state. Imagine that you are Richard Daley -- you announce that you plan to start confiscating weapons, and the people with the weapons announce that they are going to move out of state.
Call your legislators now and let them know that you aren't interested in letting things get so far out of control that a shooting war erupts.

The ISRA isn't going to stop Daley -- only you can stop Daley.

Personally, Kharn, I believe it should. However, their logic (supported by the courts) is that if you ban something then people have the opportunity to comply with the law when it goes into effect. IOW, it would be an ex post facto law if they banned assault weapons today and put you in prison for having had an assault weapon last month, but it's not an ex post facto law if you're arrested for possessing the very same gun after the ban, since you could have gotten rid of it.
You could challenge it under the 5th Amendment, but most people believe you could only force them to compensate you for the weapon, not let you keep it. I think it would be wonderful to force them to follow the same due process rules for seizing weapons under a ban as they have to follow in seizing land under eminent domain. I think the catch is the idea that eminent domain only applies to seizure "for its own use." If the Gov't isn't seizing your gun to use it, the reasoning goes, they don't owe you anything.

OK, Brent, I'll play. How?
1. Don't tell me to vote. I do.
2. Don't tell me to run for office. I am.
3. Don't tell me to join CC, Inc. I did.
4. Don't tell me to join NRA. I did.
5. Don't tell me to talk to my friends and neighbors. I do.
6. Don't tell me to join ISRA. It's a joke. I won't join it again.
None of this has made a dent. Not only is it not getting better, but we're teetering on the brink. What do you suggest I do that will stop Daley?

Don, my comments weren't addressed to you. They were addressed to those who don't think that gun owners are capable of winning wars.
I have compiled a list of firearms related bills, and placed them here: http://www.illinois-safety.net/93rd_session.html
What do you suggest I do that will stop Daley?
Here's one thing you can do to help me: assist in raising money for my planned Federal lawsuit against Illinois, to force Illinois to honor carry licenses from other states. I have talked to a lawyer who is willing and able to take on this case. He hasn't yet given me an estimate on the cost, but I expect that it will require anywhere from $50,00 to $150,000 to push this up to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
I should have a web site up and running within a few weeks with more information. I will post a link once I am ready to go.

Any so-called "Grandfather" clause is confiscation on the installment plan. In order to get your rifle "grandfathered", you would have to REGISTER your rifle. A couple of years down the road Daley, Blagojevich, Madigan et al, will finish the job and send special police squads to confiscate your registered rifles.
Conclusion: we have to completely kill these bills because grandfather clauses will NOT protect you.

Closing on the house on 3/28. Taking the wife, 4 guns and two cats to San Antonio. Lived here all my life and cannot deal with these morons any longer. Like my folks who came here in '29 from Germany I need to find some freedom.

I would do my utmost to defeat such a bill politically and vote anyone who would sponser a bill like that out of office, if that didn't work I would definitely move to another state. The problem with that is, what do you do when you run out of states to move to?????:what:
America used to be a great country!!!!

44brent - thanks for the information - I shall start calling and writing letters immediately.
On the downside, today I mentioned these bills to some of my family, who also own guns - almost to a person (save one) they all said.... it'll never happen.....they'll never pass....
I said, "Yep, that's what they said in California, Canada, New York, and England too."
What does it take to wake some people up? If I was a betting man I'd be willing to bet that most of these family members, should these bills be enacted into law, would then go into even deeper denial and start talking about how, "well they aren't so bad....you can still buy lots of guns....they won't pass anymore laws...."
The sad part too is that if we can stop this legislation from passage through our active opposition, then these passive gun owners will just say, "see we told you they would never pass."
Arrghhh! Kind of like a soldier returning from a war and having a draft dodger tell him, "See I told you the enemy would lose the war."

If we dont stop this cancer from spreading we are going to be moving to Alaska. I suggest everbody write a letters to any Illinois politician that you can think of. The antis are starting at one end and are going to meet in the middle. Yeah I know people in Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky and so on all sit around and say it wont happen here it wont happen to me. Cancer spreads and rather quickly if it is not addressed. I plan on living here a few more years and then migrating to Indiana but that isnt going to somve anything. Blago has bigger aspirations than just being gov. of Illinois.:cuss: :fire: :banghead:

After browsing the "State Legislative Watch" forum, I realized that I had missed a few bills. I have now revised my list of firearms bills, and added links to Don's analysis.

Here's what I think will definately pass:
1) The "Secret Compartment" bill. Reason: no constituency in favor of secret compartments, no political cost.
2) Semi-automatic "assault weapons" bill. Reason: small constituncy, small political cost, looks good to urban and suburban voters.
3) "Large capacity" (that is, full-capacity ) magazine ban.
Reason: see no. 2 above.
Here's what will not pass:
1) Increase in FOID card fee. Reason: Blago on record as opposed. Too politically embassing, a non-starter.
2) 10 day handgun waiting period. Reason: A fairly large number of of registered voters opposed. Not worth the cost.
3) Ballistic "fingerprinting". Reason: Too expensive in light of Illinois' budget shortfall. Tabled for another session.
Face it people, if you own an "assault weapon" and don't surrender it by this time next year you will be a felon.
