mil spec night sights

i have a springer mil spec 1911. mod. pb 9108L. i want to put night sights on it, meprolight, p-t, etc, adjustable if possible. i went by the local gun shop and the guy told me it would be cheaper to buy a kimber with them already installed. i can't believe it would cost that much. fixed sights would be okay with me. what are my options here? new slide?, fixed sights only? any idea how much installation should be? i don't mind paying for work, but i don't want to be ripped off. any info is appreciated. thanks, craig

Find another shop, installing sights don't cost as much as another gun.

Does that shop sell Kimbers with night sights installed? :scrutiny:

yes, they do sell kimbers. maybe he misunderstood and thought i had to have adjustable sights. i'm still new to autoloaders but it seems i could replace the slide or have mine machined for adj. sights rather than getting a new gun. the guy's done me good so far though. his other sales guy tried to sell my wife a kimber when she checked on a 1911. she told the new guy she wanted a mil spec like mine and he started showing her guns that started at $1200 and up. they seem to be pushing the kimbers.

Sounds like they just want to move inventory. I would look for another shop. You might check with some people for recommendations from your local shooting club.

IIRC I paid less than $100 for a local 'smith to install a front night sight on my colt. I think it was about 60 for the sight and 25 to have the dovetail cut and the slide re-blasted. Its been a year or more so I may be off a couple bucks.
I'd find another shop.

Unless he is selling Kimbers at around $300-$400 he is selling you a load of poop. I know brand new Trijicons are right at $200 for the sight (fixed sights) installation could run you maybe $80-90.

It should cost between $25 and $45 for each dove tail cut to your slide. (That's what smiths around here are charging). Sights will run you between $69 and $150 depending on what you buy. Some sights will fit your existing dovetail on the rear. Some will not only fit the existing dovetail, they will take the place of your original "staked" on front sight. If you go this route, you spend nothing for milling, only the cost of the sights and a good smith to stake on the front.
Having said that, I have a milspec that will be getting night sights very soon. I intend to have the front milled for a dove tail front sight, and use my existing rear dovetail. So total price should be in the neighborhood of $130.00.
Check around, various vendors put night sights on sale from time to time. I've never paid more than $80 for trijicons.

usp fan.. what brand of sights are you getting? i'd like to get some that are adjustable if they are available and not too expensive. if not, what are some of the good night sights? i've looked at meprolight, trijicon, pt and xs. i'm torn by indecision. btw, thanks for all the info everybody. i'm gonna check with the other shop in town. only have 2 to choose from here.

Yep, Check out MMC for adjustable. I just lost an Ebay auction for some last week, If I'd have only set my bid limit higher...
For fixed sights, both Meprolight and Trijicon have great reps. Also, Wilson Combat and Novak make good sights using Trijicon's inserts. I'm still looking for a less expensive set of MMC's, If I can't find them, I'm going to order Wilson's front tritium sight, and his non-illuminated fixed rear (for the standard dovetail).
I am interested in trying a front dot only set up for a while.
Good luck and post pics and a review when you get her done.
