In my search for a new rifle, I keep coming accross these that seem to be in nice shape for around $300.00. I have been considering the SKS, AK47, and the Ruger mini 14. This IAI M1 has a look to it I really like, but know nothing about it. Can anyone give me some info/opinions of this gun?

I've heard mixed reviews about these rifles. The only one I've been able to shoot worked well and looked pretty good. For just a little more money you should be able to find a USGI mix master rifle. That's the way I went when buying a M1 carbine.

Given your list of rifles I don't think it would be my first choice. For the $150 or so a nice Yugo SKS would set you back, I'd think it would be the better buy.

.......wish mine only cost $300. Can I assume you are looking at used IAI m-888s? New ones are around $500 around here.

IAI was rumored to have some pretty heavy QC problems at first so I would be a bit careful about picking up a used one. I bought a new one two years ago or so and have had nothing but fun with it. Flawless operation with 15 round mags but the two 30 rounders I picked up don't always feed well. They were pretty cheap so that might be the problem.

I would buy another M-888.

Go USGI.

Just a thought.

A really nice mixmaster M1 will run... what... $400-500?

I have a new early production M888 and it works great. Had the choice of buying another GI issue carbine or buying the M888. I've owned 3-4 different carbines in the past and they all worked but the accuracy and quality of the M888 was best. A GI carbine may be collectible, but according to my research they are not as good or well made as the M888 on a whole.

Quality control on the initial containers. Haven't heard anything negative recently.
