Was completely cleaned and the stock was stripped of all the grease and crud already when I picked it up at the weekend show. It looked pretty bad, but I figured I could give it some TLC. The guy was selling it cheap because it looked bad after he cleaned it, guess he didn't want to do any more with it (he had a Winchester also, but with cracks, and a completely uncleaned SA for a lot more). This is a H&R from 1954 with SA bolt and trigger group. Also, in the last picture, I don't remember reading about the stocks having any sort of bedding in them. Anyone know about it?

Looks like arsenal work--they routed channels in the stock and filled them with a white/cream epoxy. It's not the greatest stuff and I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty soft, chipped or otherwise deteriorated by now.

The arsenal repair to increase the trigger group draw (tighten the lock-up of the trigger group) was to bed the top surfaces of the stock as well as the trigger group surfaces. These are not uncommon to see.

Yours has additional recoil surface pads which is more of a NM modification than a simple arsenal repair. Your stock probably spent some time on a match rifle at some point in its life. When new, the trigger guard should close on the last 1/4" with resistance.

Hehe, I did shoot it. On Sunday, day after I bought it. But I didn't finish up the stock until Monday. I couldn't wait to shoot it, so I took it out as it was bare. I just checked the internals, and greased it, and shot it. Great fun! I need to order some more of the non-corrosive Korean ammo from Midway. It functioned perfectly.

Have an H&R myself. You have to love a good M1. Is it me or do I like my garand more than my M1a?
