Hello fellow THRer's...

I might be picking up a used Glock 23 soon, and I was told that the gun has 1000 rds through it.

What I'd like to know is what should I be looking for in terms of wear. I'm not very familiar with the Glock pistols.

Also, are there any function tests that I should perform when looking over the gun?

Pictures of normal wear on the inside would be very useful.

I would really appreciate if you guys and gals would have the answer to these questions. Thanks a bunch! :)

at 1000 rounds there should be no noticeable wear at all, unless its finish wear

You can go here and download a generic Glock manual:

http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/

It will tell you how to field strip the pistol and page 10 will how to function test the two safeties.

On .40 S&W Glocks it is normal to see some slide peening where the locking block hits the slide. It's nothing to worry about but if you want to see some pictures of what it looks like, going to www.glocktalk.com and doing a search for "slide peening" should get you some photos.

1000 rounds through a Glock is nothing. About the worst a person can do to one, aside from outright abuse or home gunsmithing "improvements", is overlube it and make it a big sticky dirt magnet inside.

Check the serial number. If it is a high D, E, or low F, a call to Smyrna would be order to make sure it wasn't subject to the most recent non-recall.

If you're buying from the orig. owner, ask him where to lube the gun. If not {and it may be hard to tell just by dry-firing} Glocks most common failure if someone does not know how to lube them is the connector/trigger bar interface. Have seen a number of them with completely ruined parts from metal rubbing against metal. Hard to tell unless you pop the rear frame pin and pull up the ejector housing to examine.

Other than that, examine the feed ramp and breechface. If the owner knew what he was doing both should be squeaky clean and nice and shiny.

9-10,000 rounds through mine with no noticeable wear except a bit on the outside of the slide from carrying it for four years.

Of course mine's a .45, a fairly low pressure round, but a G23 should have no real wear after 1,000 rounds.

Once you get past 40k rounds start checking that locking block. OK, IF you ever get past 40k rounds... :D

To check out a glock:
1)run over with SUV
2)bury in sand
3)freeze at -20 degrees
4)throw in ocean for 2 weeks
5)use as needed...it will still work of course....... ;)
