i'll go w/ USMC SOP and say six. i on the other hand always carried 2 extra in my ruc and still tote 8 total as a min for semi's. bolt guns are a different story. i only have 3 mags for my SSG, 1 for my SBS and 1 each for my BLR's (they are cross compatible so thats like having 2.
pistol wise i go w/ 5 100% reliable (wilson 47's) and a few (5-7) range mags ( chip, kimber, colts).

11-13. Seven on the road, six as spares. Of course, too much is just about right.

I usually have at at least ten magazines each for Military style weapons such as the AR15 and AK series.

For the rest I usually only have two magazines.

How many can a railroad freight car hold?

(Living where I do, one would think I'd know).

My minimum is 20. From now until Sept 2004, I'll be buying all I can.

Well, how many.. would you like to have.
Cases and cases of them. :D But, I usually have about a dozen or so mags for each of my rifles.
and what kind of mags
I definitely prefer to use factory mags for all of mine..
..to have for your rifle?
Which type of rifle are you referring to??:)
Hunting? Poodleshooting? Plinker? SHTF? Home Defense?
or perhaps a safe queen?..:)

As many as you darn well please and can afford. For range trips, I bring enough that I can reasonably reload while the gun cools. This equals 4 magazines for my AR-15. Once I shoot these, I reload the magazines (Which is REALLY quick with the MAGLULA loading device) and shoot other guns. I almost always have one or two extra guns with me that are slower shooting. I seriously doubt that I'd ever need more than about 7 mags per semiauto rifle and 5 per auto pistol though.

Jack 19,

The AW Ban will sunset then, and those mags will be cheaper. Why are you buying all you can until that date?

10-12 30 rounders for M1 Carbine. About the same number for 15 rounders.

9 M14 20 rounds. 2 5 rounders.

8 Glock 27 mags.

3 1911 mags (I really need more)

3 PT92C 9mm mags.

2 Ruger Mark II mags

3 10 round 10/22 mags, 1 30 rounder.

And stripper clips for numerous rifles up the wazoo.

I might be leaving some out.

With regard to longarms, I've only ever shot 5.56mm service grade assualt rifles so if gun ownership suddenly became legal. (Oh yeah! :D ) I'd get myself a 5.56mm rifle and......

.....10 BRAND NEW standard steel GI issue 30 round magazines for a total of 300 rounds of ammo capacity if TSHTF. (My LBE is configured to hold 8 mags anyway with 1 mag in the gun and 1 in the butt pack.)

+ 6 steel standard issue 20 rd mags for home defense. Three would be loaded for 7 days at any one time and I'd rotate the magazines to prevent the springs from setting.

Anyway, just my $0.02.

Glock 17L (ok, it's a handgun, but I have the Bubits stock):
Currently: 3x17, 2x19, 1x31, 3x33 round mags.
Desired: Another two 19rd mags or +2 floor plates and longer springs for two of the 17ers, if that's much cheaper.

Enfield No.4Mk.I:
Currently: One mag, six stripper clips.
Desired: Another five mags and ten stripper clips. Mags are a bit expensive, so the priority is on clips.

HK SL8:
Currently: Just two 10 round mags.
Desired: Up to five G36 30 round mags, which currently are outrageously expensive (90EU!). I hope that will the fall of our AW ban this April HK will start to sell G36 mags to civilians and the price will decrease.

I think around fifteen per rifle is a good number. That gives you a few to wear out, a few to function test and store loaded, and a few to tuck away.

I have better than twice that many for my AR-15. I'm a little light on mags for my AR-10, but those things are pricey. Seven twenty rounders and two ten rounders.

Only have three ten rounders and a fifty for my 10/22, but the fifty rounder is so tactical that it makes up for the lack of more mags. Tactical, you know, as in black and ridiculously overpriced.:D

I was taking stock the other day. Realized I have over $1000.00 worth of AR-15 mags. The scope I want runs about $700.00.

The rifle cost me $750.00. I've got that much wrapped up in ammo for it sitting in the closet. I'm looking at spending $550.00 on another upper.

This is an expensive distraction.

Because it could just as easily be replaced by a more Draconian 2004 ban. And part of what they will seek is a ban on importation of ANY high cap mag, regardless of manufacture.

If you bought a few extra surplus mags when you could and they suddenly become cheaper, so what. Two years ago HK91 mags were about $20 each. Now they are $8.00, big deal.

But if the Demos, get the ban they want, well it is a safe bet the prices on every mag are only gonna move in one direction.

Oh and I prefer about 10 per rifle, 6 per handgun minimum.

I go by the advice in the old song,

"Too much ain't enough."

At least a dozen for each magazine-fed firearm. And another dozen in reserve.

Well, my only real rifle is an SKS, which doesn't use mags at all

:neener:

But I do have 200 rds loaded on stripper clips.

I have three 10rd mags for my 10/22

and 2 10rd mags apiece for my P89 and P11.

a couple of 15 or 17 rounders are on the wish list for the P89

alright, I was thinking for all around/range/shtf/HD I'm prolly gonna get 7 USGI 30s for my AR (1 in the gun, 6 in LBE) to keep in good condition for 'serious' reasons (in case I ever have to perforate more than paper) and then pick up a couple Orlite 30s for range use, because I've seen some for less than postban 10 rounders cost (like 9 or 10 bucks)
Sound like a good plan?

They are not any cheaper over here. I've seen them online (in the past year) in the $89-$110.00+ USD price range.. Who knows if they are legal to own, they were probably snuck into the country..;)

Hmmm, I have two thoughts:

You guys are crazy

I don't have enough magazines.

AK47: 3-30 Round Mags, 500 Rounds

Garand: 3 Clips, 120 Rounds

Enfield: 3 Mags, 2 Stripper Clips, 150 Rounds

Glock 17: 2-10 Round Magazines, 1-17 Round Mag, 1-33 Round Mag, 19 Rounds:what:

Dan Wesson: No Speedloaders, Speed Strips, etc. 50 Rounds of Ammo.

I think I need some more magazines.

I always buy at least six mags for anything I ever intend to really shoot. I have at least one spare for everything though; I mean I have a spare for all my .25s.....................
I have 25, 30 round mags for my ARs.
I have 8, 20 round mags for my ARs
I have 2, 10 round mags for my ARs

I fully intend to buy more. Why ? I like to try different mags. Of course my "go to" mags are all USGI. But I had to try the Thermolds, I had to try the Orolites. I will have to try the British steel mags.

I have over 50 mags for my Sten MK. II submachine gun.

I load mags in front of the computer or TV. I don't like to load mags "in the field".

If we're talking about "business" weapons, I personally believe you should have at least 2x the number of mags that your "gear" allows for.

Because I don't believe for a second that the AW ban will be allowed to sunset. In fact, my prediction is that it's going to get worse.
