U.N. cuts off links with critical doctor

Los Angeles Times
Dec. 15, 2004 12:00 AM

UNITED NATIONS - U.N. officials have decided not to renew the contract of a doctor who co-authored a controversial memoir about life on the front lines of U.N. peacekeeping in the 1990s.

Andrew Thomson, who has worked for the United Nations for 12 years in New York, Cambodia, Haiti, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Rwanda, received a letter three weeks ago declining to renew his contract.

Thomson and two colleagues wrote Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth, which reads like an illicit peek into the trio's diaries during a decade of adventure and angst, and contains graphic descriptions of romantic escapades. advertisement

It also delivers harsh judgments about the U.N. as genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia happened under its watch.

"If blue-helmeted U.N. peacekeepers show up in your town or village and offer to protect you, run," Thomson wrote. "Or else get weapons. Your lives are worth so much less than theirs."

Yep... having seen UN peacekeepers in action (and experienced their "protection") in more than one country, I'm afraid that the next time I have to rely on them for safety, I'm likely to assault their nearest member (or two) and appropriate their weapons and ammunition for my own use! I'd be a lot safer that way...

As anything more than a poorly-run, extremely inefficient charity, the UN has been useless for a long while.

Obvious solution: relocate the U.N. to Zimbabwe.
