i am considering getting a police trade in Sig P 220 .45acp. i know finish may well be rough, but are they usually shot as little as many say? basically i'm looking for 1 that is mechanically sound & should give years of trouble free service. if you have any experience with one of these trade ins or have a good source for 1, i'd appreciate hearing about it. thanks.

I saw two that NYPD cops had owned. Sold when the department went to Glocks. They were like new , and the new owners were very happy. I've heard of many good deals like that. SIG is now selling refurbished pistols so that might be the way to go if you want to be sure of the source.

FWIW, I've put 13,000+ rounds through my p245, which is the 220's little brother. With a new recoil spring ($8), it's good as new. I'd wager that's more rounds than your average police trade in.

Sigs are tough as nails. The more you shoot them, the happier they are.

I just purchased a Sig 220 refurb about a month ago. It is in fantastic shape mechanically and really good shape cosmetically. It came with night sights too. It has a greasy smooth double action pull and SA is light and clean. It shoots exactly to point of aim and eats anything.

I found what appears to be one yesterday at a local shop. I asked them to put it back for me so I can agonize over it overnight and decide today if I really want it.

Finish shows a little carry wear. The bore needs a good scrubbing. It has 3 factory mags with it. Comes with a cheap Plano case. There are 2 replaced springs in a baggie along with 4 old grip screws.

All for $380 & tax out the door.

Go for it. It is a great deal. Good gun. Most Police Officer's don't shoot unless the dept. pays for it.

I have been completely satisfied with my Sig 220 police trade-in from CDNN. The finish and grips were in good shape, and the mechanism was just getting broken in- very slick. I'd say go for it.

...as the hammer return spring in the 220, and a lesser degree in the 228, tends to weaken with time and use. This can set the stage for a shooter defeating all the built in safety of the pistol and creating a gun that will fire if dropped on the hammer.

Have the used gun checked and approved by a quality gunsmith.

A 220 is NOT "a full-size .45." It has a barely 4" barrel, making it more of a Commander than a Government .45 - the TRUE "full-size .45!" ;)

I have a PD surplus P220 that is a fine gun. I had Teddy J do an action job and crown the barrel where it was dinged against a seatbelt buckle or keyring and expect it to last me.

Depending on the price, I'd buy one. You can't go wrong with a 220. I'd definitely inspect it first before buying if possible. If it's a Sig certified pre-owned gun, it will also come with a 1 year warranty.

FWIW: The 220 is listed as a "Classic Full Size" on their website.

thanks to all for your imput. I have bid on 1 from a police supply co. they are local trades, in 90 % cond., night sites, 3 factory mags & in original boxes. The rep said they all have been gone over by a qualified smith & are duty use quality. i guess i'll see if it was wise.
