While many of the world’s richest people saw their fortunes shrink again in the last year, Oprah Winfrey’s grew enough to put her on Forbes magazine’s list of billionaires — the first black woman to join the ranks.

...

Meanwhile, Oprah’s media empire grew steadily stronger, and she made the list this year with a net worth of $1 billion. Her debut comes just two years after Black Entertainment Television founder Robert Johnson became the first black billionaire.

Michael: "Gee, Oprah, guns are bad. They kill women and minorities. Why don't you tell your security detail to stop carrying them around Chicago and Michigan City?"

Oprah: "Because guns are for me, not for thee."

Too much freedom... yep, that's it. Bill Clinton said it first. Too many freedoms in America.
Better take a few away. Ahhh, all better now? Feeling SAFER are we?
..."Why Americans use guns to kill other citizens"... more like low life killing other low life with a few innocent by-standers and/or accidental homicide victims thrown in.

How does one go about factoring out the suicide (the easy part, I know) and the scum vs. scum to get a true picture of... "Americans use(ing) guns to kill other citizens"...?

Stay tuned till tomorrow. Someone watch it for me, I've gotta work for a living.

Adios

A few years ago, I broke bones in both feet and was in bed watching that FA Rosie attack Tom Sellik. The next day we had satellite TV and I haven't watched the big 3 since (abc, cbs, nbc). In fact, I will not do so for as long as I live. It will do no good to write or call the network, but you might make a list of her sponsors and start a letter writing campaign. Too bad Ofra can't remember what it's like to be a "little people" with no money. "Can't everyone afford bodyguards?"

Check out the copy of Time magazine that showed all the "victims" of guns in one day. The majority were inner city scum and suicides. No great loss to the civilized world.

For me it was Barbara Walters blathering about the 'new plastic Glock, a deadly handgun that can pass through airport scanners undected' That was in 1985...all the time since has gone to activities not including network T.V.

Why subject yourself to ignorance?;)

If you can't do without the 'network fix', at least write and tell the sponsors you object to misleading drivel, and support the programming (if you can find it) that attempts to deliver balance.:)

The only shows I watch are travel shows, food shows, and pro-wrestling..

I don't even own a TV, and so I only watch those shows on rare occassions..

That said, Oprah is a dictator.. read some of the interviews of her past employees.

Hitler was a dictator who was against Jewish ownership of guns..

Am I likening Oprah to Hitler? Not really, I'm just saying, those with dictator mentalities generally don't like an armed populous...

Just once I'd like to know about when the likes of Oprah is taping a show like this beforehand, so someone could go in and lay down the truth, if not for Oprah's sake, then the audience.

Wouldn't watch it if they paid me. It's alright. They'll pay me to watch it. Or at least do my work while doing my level best to ignore it while it plays in the background.

However, they are most assuredly not paying me enough to even be in the same room as a television that's playing 'I'm A Celebrity- Get Me Out Of Here!':barf: :barf:

Jeez - do you even watch Oprah Winfrey?

She may not ever make the cover of Soldier of Fortune, but I have not seen her racism or intollerance and I have watched several episodes in the past year or two.

The ep with the American house cleaner lady who sent money to a widow in South Africa was particularly moving.

The ep I saw with Michael Moore did not really have Oprah weighing in on the gun issue either way. Sure she is probably an anti, but she is a rich, African American woman who lives in Chicago - where would she ever learn anthing else?

I am proud to say I have never watched her show. She epitomizes everything wrong with America.

Wow, how incredibly enlightened.

You are saying you never watch her, but she epitomizes whats wrong with America.

I am stunned by the magnitude of that statement.

95% of what Oprah does on her show is very good - possibly 98%.

Oh sorry, I forgot, you guys are all hairy chested nut scratching he-men.

Oprah features numerous segments on people who reach out to other people and show compassion and love and genuine human kindness.

She encourages people to be good to each other and so be self analytical and to persue their dreams in life.

Yeah - sounds like everything that is wrong with America.

I call BS - put up or shut up. :barf: :barf:

She certainly sets a powerful example for everyone that hard work and determination can earn you a place among the few.
Pendragon, you are correct, she is definitely a humanitarian and helps people daily. BUT, we sack scratchin' rednecks do not have to agree with her concerning her position and influence on the subject of RKBA. I'm sure I have a poor grasp of what it's like in the mind of Oprah, But try to tell that to the legions of soccer moms that worship her.

March 4, 2003, 01:00 PM
Well, I do not see Oprah as anti self defense.

I see her as a Chicago dwelling African American woman who sincerely is interested in helping people.

She is a far cry from a Rosie position of "take all guns now".

Where is she supposed to hear the truth in her environment?

GSB

95% of what Oprah does on her show is very good - possibly 98%.

I actually do know a bit about what she purveys because I've seen the effects of her "philosophy" on people I cared about, and I consider her enormously destructive. That she tries to disguise her New Age liberal feel-goodism selfishness behind a facade of self-help and "consciousness raising" does little to ameliorate the rotten core at the pit of her destructive philosophy of self-centerdness and ego.

March 4, 2003, 03:38 PM
GSB, I "think" I understood where you were directing this thread but could you please define "ameliorate" or should I consult my dictionary ?

Pendragon, I agree, she is miles away from the "Rosie" elitist attitude and does open the hearts and minds of those that wish to grow. In the windy city, I am sure she relies on some form of
protection.

if oprah really did "good" for people, she'd be putting her billions of dollars into making sure there are no homeless, and that all my bills are paid. so long as she keeps hoarding her money and exploiting other peoples problems to further her own agendas, shes the devil incarnate as far as i'm concerned.

Pendragon

Please

spacemanspiff, put down the crack pipe and step away from the keyboard.

if oprah really did "good" for people, she'd be putting her billions of dollars into making sure there are no homeless,

So, the only way to try and be a good person is to try and help homless people? Oprah does not have "billions", her net worth is about 1 Bil right now. I would be suprised is more than 25% of that was liquid.

and that all my bills are paid. so long as she keeps hoarding her money and exploiting other peoples problems to further her own agendas, shes the devil incarnate as far as i'm concerned.

So the real reason you hate her is because

1. She does not give you money
2. She keeps her own money
3. She makes money by trying to help people, but is really just exploiting them and using them to further her "agenda".

Do you realize how that makes you sound?

She is under no obligation to share her wealth with anyone - least of all some grouchy spaceman in Alaska.

Do I agree with everything Oprah does or says? Not even close.

I do think she is sincere in wanting to find meaning in life and find ways to help people overcome difficult problems in her life.

If you are a student of Meyers-Briggs or David Kiersey, look up the INFJ temperment to understand how she is wired and what motivates her. Less than 2% of the population is wired that way according to the experts.

Oprah does a lot of good and she does things that I think show she does not have much of a foundation when it comes to spiritual beliefs. But I respect that she is interested in helping people and searching for "truth".

Anyway, I believe that I can learn something from just about anybody and it does not equate to a wholesale buy in of their belief system.

As my daddy always told me: "eat the meat and leave the bones".
