Anyone know of an online source for Federal's 9mm +P Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ) ammunition?

AmmoMan's got it at $19/box with minimum order of 5 boxes, but I was unable to find it anywhere else after doing some net surfing.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I am just curious, but why do you want it, instead of conventional JHP's?

I buy it locally for less than $15/box, even when it's special ordered. Ask your local store if they'll get it for you...

local gun shops in Austin carry it at 17.99 / box of 50.

Some semi-autos have trouble feeding JHPs reliably. Federal's EFMJ is supposed to alleviate that since it has the profile of a standard FMJ.

EFMJ has advantages that go well beyond reliable feeding. I like it for it's reliable expansion, even when fired through barriers or multiple layers of heavy clothing - a well-known problem with JHPs.

I get mine from ammoman.

I like the EFMJ for the slightly extra penetration through clothing and light barriers while retaining the flattening effect of a good HP.

I know this has only been shown in lab environments and home grown tests up to this point but from what I have seen it works very well and is priced very competitvely for 50 rounds.

The only problem I heard about was a lack of expansion in cold weather with the early design bullets.

I like it alot.

You can pick some up at Kesselring's for $15.50 a box, no minimum.

In 9mm, EFMJ has roughly the same profile as JHP. NOT the same as standard FMJ. If feeding is an issue, look for something else, or perhaps a more reliable gun.

YMMV

Any theories as to why it would be better penetrating clothing and light cover vs. a conventional HP? My understanding is that the HP would fill and perform as normal ball. The EFMJ, on the other hand, should begin to expand (and thus put on the brakes) with first contact, which means it would penetrate less...

correcT?

I mean if something causes the HP to deform, it should certainly cause the EFMJ to mushroom, right?

Actually, it's not better penetration through heavy clothing that's the objective - it's more reliable expansion. Both (JHP and EFMJ) will penetrate even the heaviest clothing with little problem. Hollow points, however, require the hydrostatic pressure that occurs when the bullet cavity fills with tissue (which is mostly water) to cause mushrooming. When fired through fabric or other dense, dry material the cavity clogs and the round performs more like conventional ball. EFMJ expands when it hits most anything - it doesn't depend on fluid pressure to function.

Check out the link on the ammoman.com site (under either the 9mm or 45ACP ammo sections) for a better explanation.

AHA! Just got the most recent Natchez Shooters catalog, and they have 9mm EFMJ for 12.50/box (or so). If you can't get it locally, that's pretty cheap! :)

I disagree with you about the feeding reliability of the EFMJ.

It has a blunt nose, and its profile is much more like a JHP then a FMJ. In fact, some JHPs have a more rounded profile.

I have a couple of guns that cant feed JHPs, nor can they feed EFMJs. I tried it. It just doesnt work.

I have seen other comments by other people praising the EFMJ for feeding reliability, and I think it is a common misperception that this bullet is shaped like a FMJ

I have a gun which does not feed FMJs very well and was hoping that the EFMJs would work in the gun.

It's worth the purchase of a box to find out.

Thanks for all the info and I'll be checking those sources out.

Why would anybody want that cop-killer round? :D

Seriously, I've never seen them locally and I've been looking for them since I first read about them last year in a gun rag.

Anybody seen it in Western WA?

After looking at the images at the Ammoman website it appears that I was incorrect and the 9mm EFMJ is indeed shaped similar to a JHP. Can anyone point me to photos of Federal's EFMJ rounds next to run of the mill FMJs?

If you want a bullet that is supposed to expand like a hollowpoint but has the lines of a FMJ look at Cor-bon's new Pow'r'ball.

I get mine thru Jerry's Sports for about $12.00 a box...very accurate in my 9mms.
