Trust me on this one, and your wallet will thank you later. RUN FAR AWAY! As soon as you realize what's available for so little money, you'll be hooked :neener:

mosin nagant (russian rifle used on eastern front and kicks like mule)

Which one? 91/30, 38 or 44? The 91/30 is the big long one, 38 is short one without bayonet, and 44 is the short one with the permenant bayonet. I have a 91/30, and a friend has a 38. Great fun. Can't go wrong for under $100, you could drop that gun off a cliff every day, and it would still outlast you.

mauser 98k (german rifle used as basic training unit for wermacht
Unless I am horribly mistaken, The 98k was the primary service rifle of Germany during the 2nd War. Much like the US Garand. Have a 98k also. Great gun, although I can't give an accurate report because I haven't shot it yet :( The genius of the Mauser design lives on to this day. Many commercial hunting rifles are still built pretty much like the first Mausers. Just one of those perfect designs that won't be replaced.

Can't go wrong with either. Buy them both, and a bunch of ammo, and you will still be under what a new rifle would set you back. And the new rifle wouldn't have much on either of the old warhorses, either.

Don't do it!!!!

Surplus rifles will breed in a safe. You will be knee deep in cosmoline before you can say achtung!

The others are right, collecting WW2 arms is dangerously easy to do, especially with a C&R permit, but I say go for it. We have both the M44 Nagant and a K98. I personally like the latter one a bit more, though both are fine guns and pretty comparable. I'd probably suggest the Mauser first, as the supply of those is likely to dry up sooner. The M38s are even cheaper than the 44 at most places. AIM usually has good deals. British No 4 Enfields can also be had for less than a C-note.

Have to agree with everyone else so far, beware! Once you get started there is no stopping. If I was to get a blood test done they would probably only get cosmo. from my vein.

Buy a Mauser 98 and this video (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280127794787&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=018) Any resemblance between the seller and myself is purely coincidental :D
