What would be the best way to pistol wip somebody? Hold it by the barrel and smack away with the butt?

You hold it by the grip and hit them with the barrel. That way if the gun goes off it shoots them and not you.

With the underside or topside?

If an automatic, "slap" with the side of the slide. Chopping down with the bottom of the frame can bend the dust cover to the point the gun will not function. With a revolver, grasp it high around the butt and over the hammer to restrain it and DO chop with the trigger guard area.
But as Bill Jordan said, best to avoid it altogether; the case WILL come to court and it is actually easier to prove you did not shoot somebody too much as it is to show you did not hit him too hard.

Back in the long-gone bad old days of police brutality the S&W .38/44 Heavy Duty was widely respected for its robust construction and ability to deliver a fight ending blow. The ejector rod housing left a deep gash usually without breaking anything (on the gun that is). Today, they just pull up their face masks, break down the front door, toss in a few stun grenades, and threaten to kill everybody. Oops, what did you say that house number was again? No need for robust construction anymore..........

For some reason, I gotta think that the only realistic reason to pistol whip somebody is because you are out of ammo and the gun is your only weapon and its only use is as an expensive rock. If the gun is serving as a non-functioning gun-rock, then whether or not it is going to get damaged really isn't relative to the situation. Concern should not be for the gun at all.
Surprisingly, guns can and do break when being used as impact weapons. They are not designed for that.
If your gun is not empty and still functioning, then you probably have no business moving so close to the bad guy that you can hit him with your gun. Moving into close proximity gives the bad guy a chance to grapple with you which means you stand a chance of losing your gun that can then be turned on you and fired.
FYI, pistol whipping a person in the head can be considered use of lethal force in some states since you are using a hard object and trying to produce enough blunt force trauma to subdue the other guy. Such trauma to the head can definitely be life threatening. As such, if you still have ammo and feel that the guy needs to go down, then don't get yourself danger close so as to use lethal force in an attempt to wound. The liability may be the same whether using the gun as a club to the head or shooting the guy.

If I'm out of ammo, I'm imbedding my rear sight into the 'soft spot' of the dude's skull.... but if it ever comes to pistol whippin', then I hope I'm packing my 7 1/2" .44 Redhawk!:D

Why do you ask, natedog?

Yeah, this thread is great!
It is funny to watch people ponder on the best way to pistol whip someone. I am not knocking it-very legitimate question-I just think it is amusing.
It is kind of like asking "If I am going to hide a body, how deep should I bury it?" Just an amusing subject to discuss.

Oh, I don't know, I was just curious. I think it would be better to spend the time practicing changing mags or carrying extra mags than to practice pistol whipping. Just sorta popped into my head.

Well ok. I was hoping the reason was going to be something like, "What if I run out of ammo and he's still coming at me, how do I pistol whip him?" I would now put the question in the same category as if you asked, "How do you break someone's arm with a baseball bat?"
The question isn't fit for THR.
