Accumulating guns...Am I nuts?
Drjones

So here I sit, pondering the purchase of ANOTHER gun. (Oh, no! I'm sure you're all saying... ;) )
Actually, it would be my first rifle: a Marlin 336 stainless, in 30-30, thank you.
I don't yet have a rifle (well, a coupla old .22s, but....) so I suppose I need a rifle. Plus I've probably been reading too many SHTF threads...
Most of all, I feel a need to accumulate guns because living in CA, the day may very well come when it becomes incredibly difficult, if not outright impossible to own them. :(
Or am I just suffering from "Sky's falling" syndrome?

NO YOU ARE NUTS .Looking at the Anti-gun climate in the Prk you are actually SMART. Just look at the Handgun approved list its shrinking daily. Alot of the older nicer handguns can only be bought PPT . And then they are trying to ban the 50 Bmgs in the Prk. New handguns you are limited to 1 a month and they are trying to extend that to long guns.SO ACCUMULATE AWAY.:D

Kahr carrier has the right idea.
Buy until it hurts. It''s one of the ways to communicate how we "feel" about the encrochment of our rights.
Besides, there's ALWAYS one more gun that you want, isn't there?
My GF and I started "collecting" in August last year:
Walther P99
H&K USP 45
SA XD-9
Walther P22
SA Ultra Compact
CZ 75BD
CZ 97B
Para 14.45 Limited
Beretta Cougar
Beretta 96 Elite II
Mossberg 590A1
MN M-44
Ruger 10/22
SA M1A Scout
Tikka Whitetail
Just added an SKS yesterday and have my eye on the next purchase, A Marlin lever action and .357 revolver to match (haven't decided which yet).
There's LOTS more to go.... :D

It would be more 'nuts' if you didn't want more guns!:)
That Marlin stainless is on my list to acquire also...the purchase process takes even longer here in Australia than in PRK, if that is any consolation;)

What? No rifle yet?
DID I SEE YOU TYPE THAT YOU HAVE NO RIFLE?
Are you freakin' nuts?!
"--without it I am useless..."
;) ;) ;)
Tsk tsk, Dr. Jones. You have been remiss. There is no "suppose" about it. Everybody needs a high-powered rifle, period. However, you're willingness to address this problem is a sign that you realize you have a problem. You must forthwith immediately purchase as many rifles as you can afford.
If you do not comply with this, we'll have to ship you off for re-education. Maybe someplace like Texas. Remember, guns are more important than food.
The stainless Marlin sounds like a dandy choice. My first gun was a Winchester M-94 in .30-30. Be warned that those slick little flyweight leverguns can kick pretty viciously, particularly with 170-grain bullets. Don't be fooled by all the "good beginners caliber" hype about the .30 WCF. In a gun that weighs less than 7 pounds, it can make your shoulder purple if you're not paying attention. (And if you shoot 60-odd rounds of Silvertips the first time out with no instruction like I did. Ouch.)
Other options include a Savage M-99 in either .308 or .300 Savage, or the aforementioned Winchester.
In the context of the Kaliforny gun-grabbing attitude, you might want to advance consideration of a semi-auto up to the top. A Garand would be a good choice, or an M-14 copy. Of the two, the Garand is probably going to cost less, particularly if you get it through the DCM. Other options are the BAR, the Remington 7400, and my favorite, the Remington Model 8/81. A PRK-specific reference thread. (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5846) (Plugging the M-8 is the real reason I mentioned semi's at all. They're about as cool as a stainless Marlin, and they can cost half as much, IF you can find one. We now return you to your thread's original intent. ;) )
I would suggest getting a BFR in .30-30 as a companion gun, but of course, they're not on the Kal-DOJ Extortion List. That might be a case for a pistol-caliber gun like a .44 Mag. (Yes, I saw your "which caliber" thread.) Another possibility is either a .480 or a .454. Rossi is making a slick Winchester 92 copy in .454, and USRAC is producing the Winchester 94 in .480. Revolvers in these calibers are avalable here in the Interdiction Zone, and the .454 is a rifle round by any definition except that it appeared first chambered in handguns.
I wonder if the .500 Magnum's going to turn up in leverguns. Seems like it'd be a pretty good choice...too long to wait, though.
Because you're right, after all. This is the People's Republik of Korny Kaliforny, and because our liberal gubmint unofficials squall it to the rooftops, the sky IS falling. It's just a matter of time, unless some sort of dramatic reversal of fortune happens. :(

Every shooter ought to have a lever rifle around somewhere. I shoot mostly bolts and semiautos, but even I have a Savage 99, a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington and a Rossi .357 hanging around.
They can all be used for deer hunting at reasonable ranges and two of them would work nicely for lever action silhouette, something I plan to try someday.
The Rossi is going to be replaced with a Marlin in .41 Magnum this year sometime. That will be my Cowboy Action rifle when I try that again.

At the top of any wish list, I have either guns or gun-related items. For Christmas, I got a .357 LadySmith& one of my sons gave me a swinging target for .22 practice. For Valentine's Day, our romantic night out was a trip to the range. When in doubt, get Mom ammo or a weapon!
Hubby was teasing me about his friends' wives wish lists being full of jewelry and mine being weapons. To that, I replied, "Yep...I've got more jewelry than I can wear at once, but I'm sure I could carry more weapons than I have. Besides, I have no daughters to leave jewelry to. I can leave guns to our boys." My 17 year old pipes up with how he's gonna be hovering around my deathbed, trying to get "in good" with me! Good laughs!!

You're contemplating buying your first rifle, and already you're worried about "accumulating guns?"
Don't worry about it until you have to dedicate a room to them, and closets don't count.
One suggestion: 30-30 is fine, but you really should get a .44 instead... this will neatly lead into the "But honey, I really need to get a matching revolver so I can use the same ammo" argument.

uh, Dr. J. what you need to be doing is seeking out old timers, folks who are getting up in years to the point where they may no longer feel like they want to shoot one or more of whatever they may have in their closets. If they're of like mind to those folks here, I'm sure they'd rather have those things in the hands of someone who would preserve them and use them wisely, and if approached appropriately with a reasonable monetary offer be persuaded to sell them to you...

There are alot worse things to spend money on than guns, so stock up! You can always recoup a significant portion of a gun's original value if you decide to sell, which isn't true with many things, even "necessities" like food and clothing. The only other reason I can think of is because your DEAD!
Self-defense almost never enters into my train of thought, unless you live in a third world country or a few crime centers in this country (consider moving) its a bogus issue with me. I enjoy guns for their history and design, I don't try to impress people with them or dream of "taking out" a bunch of right wing nuts. I rarely discuss my hobby with friends or anyone else other than THR, sometimes it pays NOT to advertise. I do it for my own entertainment/enjoyment, the "fruits of my labor"sort of speak. RE: "..Isn't .30-.30 ammo pricey?"
I've found it at Walmart for about $6.00/20 -- American Eagle. If you get the .30-.30 like I did(Win. '94), you probably won't shoot more than that until your shoulder gets used to it. Get into handloading and price plummets. BTW I had my first three handguns and really wasn't into rifles.
I stumbled on a PPtransfer and aquired an older Win. 22 Lr., the Win. '94 and, a couple weeks later, a friend offered me his SKS at a great price; now I spend equal time with handguns and rifles...they're all fun! I highly
reccomend the SKS -- minimal recoil and that cheap Russian ammo means you can shoot a lot! California has no internal gun lock law, as stated earlier in this thread. If you move to a more gun-friendly state, just buy "hi-cap" magazines.
So, Yes! Buy as many as you can....I don't see any downside.

The Marlin 336 in .30-30 is a great rifle. The 20" rifle balances extremely well, so it is easy to shoot offhand. Recoil, while not severe, is enough to make you flinch if you are not careful. The recoil doesn't bother me that much unless I fire off many rounds in succession from the bench. It is incredibly accurate, too. I have one made in 1948, and I have put four shots through the same hole at 29 yards with the regular sights. You made a good choice.

And with a scout sight set up it is about the most practical set up there exists. And no your not crazy , I have currently 208 firearms with 2 new(antiques) ones on the way, I have 5 large safes in Calif and a vault in Oregon.I have got rid of anything that I wouldn't/can't shoot! I started collecting when I was 9 or ten and that was almost 1/2 a century ago. I had over 300 at one time but I am giving to 4 son's a firearm each at least for Christmas or a birthday as I get older and cannot use or mainain my collection. I sold very valuable antiques over the years to finance homes, educations, business and other ventures. You see my family in Georgia had , until 1949 when it burnt down, the largest gun collection in the South , and I got a leg up early on! My wife understands that unlike clothing you don't take your guns to good will after a couple years! You don't have to have mechanics fixing them as they depreciate either, well not if you don't buy junk guns! Anyway everybody has a hobby and guns seem a lot less than Golf, boats and other money pits where your investment deteriorates as you have fun,(what the hell, primers and barrels are cheap):neener:

Thanks for asking, Matt. :)
Honestly, the reason I bumped this thread is because of my drive to accumulate pistols.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with SB 489 that commie davis signed a while back. It requires all semi-auto pistols sold in the state to have a chamber loaded indicator and mag disconnect, effective Jan 1, 2005.
Those requirements obviously mean that the vast majority of semi-automatic pistols will no longer be legal for sale in CA. :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:
So, I just bought a Desert Eagle, next gun will be a Colt 1991A1, and after that, either a stainless 1991A1 or Glock 29. There are more on the list too...
So that's my predicament.
I've not yet acquired the Marlin, though I will at some point. I guess sometime in 2005 when I can no longer buy pistols, I'll start accumulating long guns and a revolver or two.
Maybe I'll start with the .500 S&W to really piss of the antis. :D :D :D
