Just bought an AK, looking for a links on break-in and cleaning

And yes, I already searched. :)

I'm looking for a good link on how to clean my AK, and I'd like to know if there is any break-in period and what I should be doing to break it in if I have to. I've shot several firearms before, but this is the first one that I've actually purchased/owned.

Thanks in advance, gentlemen.

Break in an AK?

Just buy a few cases of ammo and go to town! :D

Dunno what kind of AK you have, but this oughta get you started on field stripping the weapon:

Here's some good info on disassembly and general info:
http://www.ak-47.net/

Here's the AK-47 forum which has PLENTY of good info on maintenance:
http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=77

The AK-47 really doesn't have, or need a break-in.
Since the bore is chrome-lined, it isn't possible to break it in, and the AK action is so loosely fitted, it works 100% right out of the box.

In other words, load it and shoot it.

If it's a Romanian variant, or even if not, it's worth checking:

OK, thanks for all of the links. It looks like I have quite a bit of reading to do :)

Thanks for the help, guys.

To break in an AK you simply pull the trigger, silly. It's pre-broke-in out of the box. Cleaning? Get some brake free and wipe down what you can see. How much did you spend on this gun? If it's a fancy US built variant or a well-finished gun, you might want to treat it better. Otherwise, treat it like you'd treat a lawn mower, add gas and make sure it gets oil every once in a while.

ydy's ak break in procedure....

1. load multiple mags with correct cartridge

2. insert mag, chamber round

3. bump fire until empty

4. see #2, repeat until handguards smell burnt....

go ahead and get that burnt wood or plastic smell out of the way...

It's got a chrome line barrel so there really isn't any break in procedure. I'd put at least a hundred slowfire rounds through it letting it cool between every mag before doing any serious rapid fire and getting the handguards smoking though.

What kind of AK variant is it?

I'll admit I'm not familiar with all of them, but are you guys sure that ALL of them have a chrome bore and chamber?

You're supposed to break in an AK?

Wait, you're supposed to CLEAN them, too??

I've heard rumors of such activity. Me? I just wipe off the internals with a relatively clean rag so I can get a good look at the internals. The design is rather nifty.

On the serious side, I do clean mine after every 3 or 4 trips to the range. Gun Scrubber for the internals, CLP for the bore, CLP to lube after cleaning. I use a regular toothbrush, works much better than the nylon "gun brushes" that people try to sell you.

I know my VEPR K does, but what about the rest of them? SAR-1? SAM7? Are these all chrome lined?

My SAM-7 Classic is chrome lined (naturally).

Take a look down the barrel to be sure there are no obstructions. I usually run a bore snake down mine just before I go out to shoot it.

Then load it up and go have some serious fun!

I have to admit I never got the front guard smellin of burnt wood but that is not for a lack of shooting the heck out of it!

CLP is all mine ever gets cleaned or lubed with.

Who here has over 10,000 rounds through their AK and what variant to you have??

CLP eh? Where's a good online shop to buy that from?

And btw, I should have mentioned this in the original post, my AK is a Romanian WASR10.

SAR-1 has a chromed bore.

Question- does the gas piston get lubed? I've been leaving mine dry after cleaning, but what's the recommendation?

Regards.

Recommendation is to leave the gas piston dry.

You can get CLP at walmart. I use Breakfree. It is back in the gun section near the Hoppes.

I wipe it off with bore cleaner then wipe it dry. The gas tube is not plated. I wipe a *very light film* of oil inside to keep it from rusting.

After shooting at the range as fast as possible so that the handguard chars and smokes you throw it into the nearest body of water until you need it again. Shake dry and reload when retreived.
