View Full Version : Are there handguns that shooters naturally gravitate towards?

I have noticed that at some point most of my buddies have looked at (at some point or another) certain handguns. For example as I tried diff't calibers I have had to try 1911's in 45 acp and S&W 4" revolvers in 357 mag. Are there specific models tho that we all have to try at least once before we can be satisifed or is it really just a matter of trying them all?

You know 10-Ring, I think you're on to something there. Besides the 1911 and S&W .357, I also had to try the Ruger Single-Six and Blackhawk single action. Bought all four, eventually.

What a great addiction!

I think that there are some guns that are simply 'standards' in any shooters stable. For example I don't know very many people that don't own a Ruger MKII and/or a Browning Buckmark.

It seems to me that the popular handguns to try out are:

Glock 17/19 (9mm), 22/23 (40S&W)
Sig 226/229 (9mm,40,357sig)
Springfield's XD (9mm,40,357sig,45gap)
various 1911's
various S&W's in 38/357
Ruger GP-100
Ruger's MK line of .22's
etc

They represent the major companies and their major product lines.

I agree with Preacherman, variety is a great thing.

You will never be satisfied ;)

Yes I think there are some Standards or Classics , that have proven themselves over time. These representatives may have been "chosen" because of Sentimentality,or Historical reasons.

I'm a fuddy duddy, I have yet to handle a Kahr for instance. I will overlook these just to see a old Model 10, 1911, BHP or Colt Woodsman in a showcase. I have to shoot these , even if I have shot others just like them...I am not sentimental, and these don't have a history with me - or do they?

Let's hear it for ''variety''!!!

No wonder I have ''aquired'' so many darned guns. ''Try before you buy'' is fine - until when you try someone else's at the range and decide you like it - you just have to go and buy!! :D

Oh well ... ''it's investment honey''!!! :p

I don't know if it is a standard thing, but I have always gravitated to big-frame Smith and Wesson revolvers and .44 Magnums in general. This led me to my first post-legal age handgun, a S&W 629-1 6". Awesome pistol! Earned major fun-factor praise from my sister's boyfriend and my little brother at the range today.

And then there are the 1911s, Glocks and .357s that seem to be natural for shooters to look at after a fashion.

Edit: Merry Christmas everybody! :)

It's kind of hard to not want a 1911 with all the press they receive.

Right now my variety is restricted to 2 (i've only been able to legally purchase handguns for 6 months, so i guess thats not too bad): Ruger P89TH (my first), and a bersa series 95 .380. The ruger gets carried everyday, by far my preference. I sill need (and i mean need, not want) a 1911 or 2, walther p99 in .40, CZ75 in.40, either a mid sized or compact glock in .40 so i can buy a .357sig bbl and have 2 guns in one. Maybe then i'll be closer to the variety i want.... or maybe not.

There's a reason they're called "classics".

IMO, the biggest ones are 1911's, Sig's, Glocks, and CZ's. There is a huge CZ cult starting to form. Oh yeah, and the BHP is strong. The force is strong in that one. :D

At some point, I think a lot of people try to look into a older model S&W revolver. Something around the taste of M27, M28 or M29. I remember seeing my first M29, one of my closest friends got a really pristine one from his father when he was 18. The bluing was.... :what:

I have all those covered except for the CZ so far.

Got that too, Model 37, was only $125 or so since the fiinish was worn.

Let's hear it for ''variety''!!!

I'll second that too, sure, even if I tied a string to every finger and toe and then tied the other end to the trigger, I would need to grow extra digits to fire them all seperate, but that is why there are extra weekends in a month, right?

Oh well ... ''it's investment honey''!!!

We all think that thought when we buy, but deep down, we really know that it's not an investment if we can't bring ourselves to sell it. :p

Think of how boring shooting would be if everybody had the same guns. :scrutiny:

There seems to be a devision among staples as well.

Glock
1911

HK
Walther
Sig

There is very little cross breeding among the groups from what I can tell. I personally fall in the Walther catagory with my best friend owning 2 HK's and I own 3 walthers.

It seems the good old boys seem to like the 1911/glock. The more elite military seems to like the HK's. Maybe its the german quality which no one can deny. Maybe its due to prior use etc.

Seemed to me the american grunts carried glock(there were a good bit of them there), berretta the standard issue, and we use to have the 1911 before my time.

The SF and detachements in direct support went all german HK and Sig (european troops had everything but many of the more elite troops liked HK and some had the walther with silencer)
