I'm not much of a shotgun person. That is, I don't know a whole lot about them but I've read enough to know that I want to get a Mossberg 500 and until I started looking I didn't think I had to make a decision beyond that. It seems like there is quite a few different Mossberg 500 models though.

Probably all I will ever do with it is bust clays for fun. I don't plan to ever enter any formal competitions and doubt I'll ever get a chance to hunt any kind of bird.

Is this one a good one?

I want something I can just take out of the box and shoot clays with. I'm not sure how bad I want to learn about choke tubes and patterns and all that. It's $230. I was actually surprised by the price, because I bought a Mossberg Maverick with an 18" barrel for home defense about 2 years ago and it was $200. I thought that was the budget line and was expecting an actual 500 to be double the price or more.

OK price. Maybe a few bucks can be saved if you shop around, but who knows?

The 500, though not my favorite, is a darn good shotgun and a fine choice. Enjoy....

That is not a bad price, you know, for what your plans are with the shotty, I would hit some local stores and find a good used one.

I just like new. I don't know what it is about having the box and a worthless cable lock, but I like it! :)

I'm finding out there are a bunch of Mossberg 500's to choose from though:

52262 Mossberg 500 12M/20MC(IF) CAMO MOBU
52263 Mossberg 500 12M/20MC(IF)CAMO RTHWG
52132 Mossberg 500 BANTAM 12M/24MC VR
56420 Mossberg 500 12M/28AC SYN PRK PRTD
50120 Mossberg 500 FIELD 12M/28MC VR
54244 Mossberg 500 SLUG 12M/24RB RS PRTD
54264 Mossberg 500 COMBO 12M/28MC&24RB RS
54169 Mossberg 500CG CMB 12M/28AC&18CB
50577 Mossberg 500 12M/20CB BS SYN 8SHT B
50579 Mossberg SPEC 12M/20CB SYN&PG 8SHT
50411 Mossberg SPEC 12M/18.5CB SYN & PG
50580 Mossberg CRUISER 12M/20CB BS 8SHT

I think some of these are just different looks like the CAMO and SYN PRK and I found out on the Mossberg site that the Bantam is the youth model. Which one would you go for? Is the 50120 500 FIELD probably the ideal Mossberg for clays?

I personaly try to purchase my stuff from a local gun shop in order to give them support and keep them around.

With that said I have also seen the 500's on sale at Wal-Mart for like $179 - $189 . that's about as cheap as they get for new ones.

I dunno the model designations. What you want is something with a 28" barrel, choke tubes, and any finish you like.

Adding a second barrel for HD, 3 gun or deer hunting will up the cost and it's not necessary for what you want to do here and now, so skip the combos.

HTH....

I found them at Wal-Mart (the Mossberg 50120 Field) for $199. My dad was with me though and talked me out of it. He told me I could use his shotgun. I think his is a Winchester 1897 and considering he hasn't used it in probably 20 years, I'm not going to pass up an offer to help it see the light of day again. He's suppose to bring it over tonight! :)

I still might go get a Mossberg one day. I've just always wanted one and now that I know the price is right, it's that much more tempting. I just can't tell my dad. :D

Your best buy is usually the sale Walmart has with the 500 and a smooth bore slug barrel and 28" ribbed barrel for $230 or so.

The extra barrels are $100 or so bought after the fact, so if you want one it's better to buy the combo with it.

I think his is a Winchester 1897

Just in case you are not familiar with this gun it is an exposed hammer pump shotgun.

The first thing you will need to do is find out wether this gun has a 2 & 3/4 inch chamber . If it is not stamped for 2 & 3/4 inch shells you need to take it to a gunsmith to have it checked.

Do NOT fire this gun until you find out for sure. The early guns had shorter chambers and modern ammo should/can not be used.

Big 5's have the same thing as what DT mentioned for $219 about every other week. 18.5" and a longer barrel too.

After all was said and done I got mine out the door for $370.00, but that came with two barells, pistol grip, sling, heat shield, night site, slugs, hard case and some other goodies. My model was #50577. it took me a few minutes to figure out but take the wood dowel out if you have one to hold 7 rounds as opposed to 4.
