The CT State Police has (probably reluctantly) ruled that AK style rifles in calibers other than 7.62x39 can be purchased in CT. Here is a copy of the letter received from them attesting to this:

Whoa! That's major good news! Not that the weapons are declared legal per se, but that the State Police responded the way they did.

I have been to the CT State Police firing range in northern CT for a little informal session with the officers. They were constantly laughing at the idiocy of the laws regarding firearms.

Excellent!
There's a lot of good news between the lines of that letter and the fact that it was written! :neener:

Good news for once. It's nice they stuck to the letter of the law instead of using the CA, "that's what we meant even though we didn't say it."
It's also nice to see them thwarted by their own ignorance.

Why calibers "other than 7.62x39"? Is the 7.62x39 now the "evil" caliber??

The gist is that they banned the AK-47 and the AK-47 only, which happens to be chambered in 7.62x39.
A rifle with an AK-47 style action, but chambered in some caliber other than 7.62x39, is not an AK-47.
It's not unlike the CA Roberti-Roos AW ban that enumerated specific models to be banned, but failed to name similar firearms. Because of this the HK-41 and Hk-43 were legal in CA, but the nearly identical HK-91 and HK-93 were banned. Also, they named the Valmets model 62, 76(in .308), and 78 (in all calibers), while failing to name the model 76 in .223.

Destructo's pretty much got it. To eliminate the problem of listing every AK47 clone, in the wording of the law they stated "AK47 type". This has been interpreted by the State Police as any rifle where the parts are interchangable with the AK47. Since the other calibers were based on AK74's & such, the parts don't interchange & it is not that "type".
I should mention that according to a lawyer for a CT sportsmen's group, this goes against a CT supreme court ruling that the law only identified rifles if there markings matched what was written into the law. I want to look up that ruling myself to verify.
