This is in the shotgun section because most of you know quite a bit about duck huntin' (for obvious reason).
I am not familar with the laws, but is it legal to hunt ducks etc.. with a rifle? Also, is it safe? ( I mean a 308 has a SERIOUS effective range).
I'm just curious...

Sorry, federal law prohibits using a rifle for migratory waterfowl.

Taking or attempting to take migratory waterfowl with anything other than a shotgun will land you in huge heaps of trouble. Doves, while not waterfowl, are also considered as Migratory Fowl last time I checked.
Ask the Game & Fish guy who was shooting doves out of their roost with a .22LR when the Federal G&F guy happened by.......
Was [ahem] interesting to say the least

I do not know about the legality of the deal but it seems to me that shooting any rifle into the air is a bad idea. I sure would not want to have a house anywhere downstream so-to-speak.
What a scary idea.

You don't shoot the rifle into the air, you shoot the ducks on the water. I have used .22WMR and .243Win. on ducks and it works fine. But be aware that a .22WMR goes about 3kilometers, and a .243Win goes about 5 kilometers after hitting the bird and water.

Shooting a duck on the water is equal to fishing with dynamite in my opinion! http://images.bravenet.com/brpics/smilie/7_mad.gif

BAD IDEA, besides being illegal!
Bullets hitting water at shallow angles oft ricochet. With high velocity rounds, the bullet path could extend for miles and still hurt/kill someone.
Even 22s will carry a mile after glancing off water....
