Where to REALLY shoot

The range I go to only allows a single round in the magazine of a big-bore rifle at a time. Anything .223 and larger, this applies to. I dont see how this make the place safer, but thats the rule and of course I follow it. Maybe somthing to do with the noise level down (outdoor range)? I know for sure another range in the area has a no "rapid-fire" rule in place. Currently, I have owned my Saiga 7,62 for a month and have not gotten to practice so much as a follow-up shot. Where would I go to do such a thing, and maybe even get in some "rapid-fire" trigger time? Do your ranges allow this?

yes. if you dont do at least some rapid firing on our ranges, you are considered to be a 'hippy liberal'. actually theres another acronym for it (PAB) but i cant divulge what it means without angering arts grammaw. and shes already taken my cookie privileges away from me once this year. :D

One of my ranges has a rule "Please keep all full-auto fire on the berm, and don't shoot at the ties".
:D

Wow, I cant imagine that. Our ranges, 3 within 45 minutes, are all clean and reasonable. The standard don't shoot at the outbuildings or posts, but nothing other than that.

My range has no attending range officer. So...

Hmmm. You need to find a place to shoot "out in the desert" or "out in the woods", as the case may be.
Best way to find such a place is to ask people at the local gun shop--preferably where you have bought a gun.
Or you could ask people at the range you go to, or at any shooting clubs.
I enjoy plinking out in the desert much more than I enjoy range time. Ranges are good for sighting in a new scope or for developing a load when handloading. Ranges show what the rifle can do. Plinking shows what YOU can do with the rifle.

My range is in my backyard. So...
My other range brings in a guy with full auto every once in a while to shoot. They'd let you shoot a .50 M2 if you wanted. Only rule is No AP (25 yard indoor range, hard on stop) and No Tracer (chemicals are toxic, I guess), among the normal safety things.
My other range is primarialy only used by anyone else round the beginning of deer season.
The only stupid thing I've heard at yet another pistol range of mine, is no pistols larger than a .22 of your own until you qualify Bar 5. Note that if you are paying to use their revolver, they have a .357 that anyone can come in and rent
My last range is a big empty spot of state land, so see #1.
That help any?

Whereabouts are you located? Someone may be able to make a recommendation. My range allows full mags, I hadn't ever heard of a range like yours. Seems really bad to me.

I bet you're good at mag changes though:D
Stange rule indeed. Get something in .222.

kinda feel your pain man .. the only public outdoor range near me wants no rapid fire .. so only 1 shot every 3 seconds they want .. pretty much sucks .. but hopefully I'll be joining a local club with a bit more lax rules soon ...

I am in Fort Bend County, Texas. MIssouri CIty/SUgarland area, outside Houston. I am kind of a worriesome guy, and the thought of just parking out in the middle of somewhere and shooting makes me imagine all sorts of bad stuff happening. The best being arrested or somthing and the worst being killed by whoever isnt waiting to see why I am shooting on their property :what:

makes me imagine all sorts of bad stuff happening. The best being ...No, the best is having a fellow THR member invite you out shooting 'cause now we know where you are. Happened to me (thanks, hso). Also good is to have someone give directions to a range where you can do what you've described. I'm probably farther away than is convenient for you, but if you wanna go out and shoot in the snow and ice with me, I'll give you directions to this part of southwestern Wisconsin. :evil: {Edited to add: it's seven degrees Fahrenheit outside right now}
Anybody closer? ;)

Might be an urban legend, but I remember hearing somewhere (don't recall exactly where right now) that tracer rounds can ignite unburned powder particles which have accumulated on the range floor, creating quite a fire/explosion hazard. Sounds like a possibility to me, though.

Malice,
BLM is the answer. BLM land is pretty much a no-holds barred deal. Just don;t shoot cattle, mustangs, or Rangers :D

Actually a regular bullet can ignite unburned powder -- I've seen it first-hand. Pretty much all the ranges around here stink. About the only time I get to do anything resembling tactical shooting is at matches. :(

Well, there has to be someone on THR who can point you to a better range nearby. If not, there is a list of ranges here: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/grants/shoot/directory.pdf Fort Bend cty is on pg. 10. Maybe best to try something out of your county though, from the looks of the list.

Malice-
Try this out http://www.psc-range.com/. The Pearland Sportsmans Club is a great range, and really pretty reasonably priced. Let me know if you need a reference.

Just out of curiosity, how does the whole BLM land thing work?
More on subject, I just picked up an employment app for my local range. They are looking for sales people to man that area of the store. The pay kinda sucks @ $5.15/hr so it's a labor of love (if you exclude the free range time :D ). Dunno, maybe it can take the place of lifeguarding on my off weekends. Whaddaya think?

My local INDOOR range doesn't care how fast you shoot or how large your magazine is just as long as you keep your bump-fire bursts down to three rounds or less.

I know a lot of people "can't imagine" this, but unfortunately, this is the norm for some of us that live near larger cities.
I'm north of Chicago...the only range within reasonable driving distances taht has 100 and 200 yd rifle only allow single loads. All other ranges either don't allow rifle or are VERY short range affairs.
Any other arrangement involves driving 3 - 4 hours. :banghead: :barf: :( :scrutiny:  Hard for a kid who grew up loving on a farm

This is how I do it.
Drive along roads bordering BLM land. Spot a suitable location with an appropriate backstop (hint: don't go near family picnics). I usually use a lane with a lotta yards and a 6000 ft mountain as the backstop. Set-up, shoot, cleanup, leave.
I have picked a few nice spots. I have even given thought to creating a semi-permanent lane situation. YMMV.

You should move to a gun friendly state like Massachusetts! There are six ranges within an hour of me, none of them have magazine limits! :D No rapid fire limit either, within safety limits.
