10ga slugs?

OK, I had a wild hair idea that I want some 10ga slugs to try out just for messing around. I will probably never hunt with them as I have too many other guns more suitable for every imaginable game animal, but I just want some.

The only manufacturer that I can find that even makes them is Federal, and I can't find anyone who stocks them.

Any help? Anybody else make a 10ga slug?

I was gonna buy some too for a friend of mine who has a 10 gauge but never got around to it. I saw them at Gander Mountain, and they were Federals.

Yep, Federal is the only game in town right now, I use them in an Auto-10, not realy as good as the newer 12 ga stuff, its the old Foster slug

You're a bigger glutton for punishment than I. I bought my Mossberg 195K bolt action 12 GA as an "all around gun" for an impoverished 18-year-old (me, 41 years ago) and ended up shooting mostly slugs on the 50 and 100 yd ranges. Requires serious padding to go through a 25 to 50 of those things. Probably part of the reason I have a never ending fight to keep flinch under control. That and the 98 Argentine Mauser 30-06 conversion with broomstick stock.

Thanks guys.

I wouldn't even think about it if I didn't have an Ithaca Mag 10 auto. ;)

I had to try them (one) a few years back. I have a single shot 10 ga, and let me tell yah, those things pack a whallop.

My first time out testing slugs and buckshot in my 870 I bought a pack of 3 inch slugs and 3 inch buckshot. I didn’t enjoy the experience with either, and have not fired any three inch shells since. I shudder to think what a 10ga slug would be like but feel free to tell us how it goes  . Whenever I feel like shooting something with recoil, I go shoot my soft shooting mosin (at least compared to that 10ga of yours :D ).

Aren't 10 gauge slugs the modern day equivalent to the classic penance rope? :uhoh: :D

If you find some... doesn't H&R make a 10ga Pardner Waterfowl model?

 :D

I've shot 10 gauge slugs through my Browning BPS. The recoil was not bad at all, not worse than a 12, but this is a heavy shotgun, really designed for waterfowling and not something you're going to carry around in the woods all day. They did not pattern well.

I've even got some 8 gauge slugs made by Federal. They are used to blow the slag off the side walls on fossil fired power plants. I don't think I would want to shoot one of those.

I have been hunting all over for a place that as them in stock. I have a couple more gun stores that I can look at, but I'm not holding out much hope of finding any local. The Fort Wayne Gander Mountain said they were out and wouldn't restock any till next fall. :banghead:

I found some at Graff & Sons on the web, but I don't have an account with them anymore and would have to send them a picture ID for buying ammo on line or mail order, may still have to get around and do that. Wideners didn't have any listed, or Cabelas, or Midway USA or Midsouth Shooters Supply. :(

Kudu, i had to have the local shop order them for me,as no one around here carried them, the closest I got was the New Bas Pro in Hampton,VA and they only had 2 cases and they went just before deer season. I shoot them in the same gun,, have been looking for years now for one of the Road Blocker bbl's.. 18" 10 ga, OHHHH BABY!!!!! :what:

I only shot 6 Federal slugs out of my 20" AYA because (blush) THEY HURT! But 2 oz of almost .80 cal joy is very nice! My SxS shoots together at 15 yards and diverges to opposite sides about 8" apart at 25 yards. Oh well I CAN hit your chest at 25 yards pretty much for sure. How ever I like 54 pellets of buffered copper #4 buck for what I intend the gun to do ; eradicate critters under 50 feet!

10 gauge slugs are not for the faint of heart. Here is a visual comparison between the aformentioned 10 gauge Federal slug and my departments issued Remington Slugger slug. You be the judge on how much fun it is to shoot(actually, it ain't that bad out of my Mag 10, but it ain't like shootin' .22s at squirrels either!):

Oh yeah, and before I forget, type "federal f103rs" into google and you'll find a bunch of places that sell the the slugs you are looking for. Good luck and have fun!

Um, Wow. I shoot a lot of Remington sluggers when I shoot slugs, and they have a pretty decent wallop for 12ga slugs. That 10ga slug makes the Remington slugger look like a aguila minishell! Out of curiosity, is there anything in north America to warrant hunting with the 10 slug rather than the 12 slug, or is it just to be a little bit different(not that’s a bad thing says the guy who went hunting with his mosin )

I have a few boxes coming from Natchez shooters supply this week. Maybe I'll get out to shoot a few if the weather is fit.

SAP, no not realy, as its the ole foster type, now if some one would make and build something along the line of the Bernneke,or the newer Sabot stuff,it would be some thing else all together :D

The 10 gauge slug is 766 grains(according to Federal Cartridge Company).

I used to shoot them in my old Ithaca RoadBlocker. It was quite invigorating, but I got rid of the gun since it only held 2 rounds in the magazine. I can't remember where I got the Federal slugs, but you probably won't find them at a local shop. You'll need to mail order them from a distributer.

Well UPS delivered today and brought my slugs. It was 60 degrees out so I found a piece of cardboard to shoot at and took a couple of shots. At $1.30 a shot I didn't make a 3 shot group. I broke the Mag 10 out of the back of the safe and checked to see what choke tube was in nad found it had an extra full steel choke in. I put in an improved mod which was the only other one I could find.

I paced off about 75 yards and leaned against a tree for support and took two shots. Recoil was not too bad in the gas gun, better than a .416 Weatherby with a brake on anyway. Shots were strung about 2" right and one 3.75" above the other. Not bad for bead sights on a vent rib.

I hope the pic comes out, I'm not too good at them.

You can get them from Outdoor Marksman. They're a good outfit to do business with in my experience.
