knowing I'm venturing into a highly subjective area.......I dearly love shooting .357 mag loads but, oh that muzzle/gap flash!

The stoutest standard pressure rounds with the best accuracy have been Georgia Arms 125 gr SJHP's but the muzzle/gap flash is beyond dazzling.

The flashbulb-like halo that eminates from the cylinder gap/forcing cone area is something to behold, fanning out for what looks like a two foot area surrounding the gun.

So, who makes a good standard pressure 125-158 gr round that has MINIMAL muzzle/gap flash? Some ammo manufacturer must be using a recipe that reduces this, don't you think?

I'd sure appreciate your own personal observations on this....

22, have you tried that Czech stuff, S&B? IME, very good receipe.

Just think of this as an excuse to buy more ammo and experiment at night. Hey, any excuse to go shooting.:D

All I can say is ........ you want the velocity ..... you gets da flash!!!

Nothing I have found that reduces this significantly at all. I am not impressed with most factory .357's .. too many are downloaded to ''pussy'' loads .. I guess the manufacturers don't wanna be liable for blowin up yer piece!!

I load a just sub max round ..... 14 grns Vit N110 behind a Lyman gas check cast 158 swc ... wonderful bullet. But I have to accept that there sure will be some flash ... and even if cyl/force cone gap is real narrow ....... it'll flash!! Muzzle too.

''Goes with the territory'' IMO.:p

Perhaps we should have a "You light up my life" contest to look for the biggest flash from a 4 inch gun? I'll see of I can get some pics this weekend.

Now that'd be fun.. problem is my outdoor range closes (for the most part) at dusk..and the indoor ranges aren't setup to well for pictures..

Perhaps on a cloudy day..

Should it be limited to un-ported 4" revolvers? Or two seperate classes?

Ooops, sounds like I'm contributing to a hijacked thread...:what:

For factory ammo, back in the '80's W-W Silvertips were advertised (and photo'd by quite a few different folks) as having special flash retardent stuff added to the gunpowder.

As a rule, the hot 125 gr. loads had the biggest flash.

I haven't checked into this since then, and don't read all the mags like I used to, so I dunno the current info.

Anyone out there good at high-speed photography? I'd get a kick out of some good dim-light revolver shots being posted here.
Sometimes, I don't think we realize that we are holding a small, controlled bomb detonating right in our hands!

Our indoor range is quite dark and when I start touching off those .357 mags, it always seems to attract some attention.

Most of my stuff has been shot out of a 2" snubbie which makes it even more spectacular.

Fun to shoot? Oh yeh.

Curious how ProLoad's loads would fair in this department?

125 gr bullet with Bluedot or 296 out of a snubby will sure attract attention at an indoor range. Pretty spectacular at night! Will try and use a video cam some time.

Like some have said in .357 muzzle flash goes with the turf especially with slower powders.

You might want to try some Winchester Silvertip 145 gr. JHP's. The ones I used to shoot had little flash. They were accurate. (They are a good self defense load too.)

22, if you are getting that much flash, I almost wonder about the cylinder gap dimensions on your revolver. Most decent guns have a gap no larger than .004, my newly worked on Mod65 is gapped at .0025. I do not see the amount of flash you are describing.

You must also bear in mind, that high intensity cartridges, no matter the caliber, will have substantially more muzzle blast and flash than a .22.

Recently I was at the range trying out one of the employee's 'home loads' on his 357 and was pleasantly surprised at the lack of flash...don't know the recipe he used, but a change might be all you need :)
