View Full Version : Why IWB?

I've carried my pistols in a variety of concealed holsters, but not much IWB.
My single IWB experience was limited to a G30 and a Blade-Tech IWB-type holster, and I found the combination to be really, really uncomfortable and difficult to access. When tucked, my Mom said it looked like I was trying to conceal a colostomy bag. And that was after she "made" me.
So...the question is...wht is it that IWB seems to be the "preferred" carry geometry among those in the know?
Thanks!
Rich
P.S. -- I just received a VM-2H for use with my SRP. I'm going to try it again. And this time, I hope it doesn't look like I have a bowel condition.

For myself, I've found that IWB tends to help bring the gun closer to my body (I carry a Government model 1911) and thus it doesn't stick out as far, which then helps in concealment as my shirt can hang down over the gun in a natural manner.
I carry in a Milt Sparks VM-2 and love it. Very comfortable as it spreads the weight of the gun over a wider area.

It puts the bbl inside my pants, which allows me to wear a much shorter cover garment than normal. This allows a wider range of clothing to be worn that will still cover the gun. In addition, with a good belt worn along with the IWB, the grip of the gun is pulled very tightly into the side, enhancing concealment and retention.

Sounds like you were trying to conceal it up front. I find that it conceals better at 3:30 or 4 o'clock for me (right-handed).

If you wear a good belt and your pants aren't too tight they feel fine and conceal way better than an OWB...as for weight, a gun will actually feel lighter inside the pants tha outisde.

I have found that the best IWB holster is the RM Holster I have Milt Sparks Versa Max II Holsters there good holsters but the RM is the better it's quick on quick off the belt. And it's really clean. Give it some thought.

I carry my G-22 in a DeSantis Cozy Partner IWB holster. It is the most comfortable holster I've ever used including the Galco Combat Master I used to carry it in.
I can carry the Glock completely concealed with only a polo or t-shirt for cover. It is also reinforced for one-handed reholstering and is easy on, easy off.

"Tuckables" have never worked for me. I prefer a cover garment of some type, even if it's just an untucked shirt.
I do like IWB, however, primarily because the surface area of the holster is entirely pressed against your skin. Seems to sort of float there, especially with rough side out rigs like Nelson's old summer special, Jerry Ahern's rigs, or Galco Royal Guards.
Makes you forget you're carrying the thing.

I think the Glocks are a little chunky for comfortable IWB carry, personally. If I was to go back to carrying a Gee-Lock I'd look into some kind of high-ride OWB, like an Alessi CQB or something. Something that tucked in tight, low-pofile and carried the gun up a bit.
IWB is just perfect for a single-stack 1911, though. Super comfy and no barrel to worry about peeking out under your cover garment.

IWB carry is where you find out that rough side out leather is better than Kydex.
You do have to dress for it, too. Increase the waist size of pants by 2" and wear a stiff belt. This makes a huge difference.
The holsters have different thicknesses depending on brand and model, this makes a difference too.
Probably why so many of us have the "holster box" tucked away in the closet somewhere...

In my experience IWB makes for a more efficient and more comfortable carry system if the carrier will make the necessary clothing/holster/belt decisions. I tried carrying the G30 concealed several years ago. I really loved the way it shot but it was just too bulky to be a really effective/comfortable CCW for me.
