Not real familiar with this caliber. Is the 180 grain the typical bullet weight? Say for Gold Dot from a G23?

Thanks

180 and 165 grain are probably equally popular. I think I few guys here have 155 grain loads in their carry guns.

I use 180 grain Sellier & Bellot for practice and 180 grain Federal Hydra-shoks for carry. I've also been known to carry 165 grain Remington Golden Sabers. All work well and function perfectly in my firearm.

180 Gold Dots will be fine in your Glock 23.

i'm a fan of the lighter and faster bullets so i carry 135 grain loads for self defese. for practice i use whatever happens to be there. the short barrel of the Glock 23 leads to slightly lower velocities than might be listed on the package of your ammo but even the 180 grain will still function and expand just fine in your gun. the 180's are designed to function at 950fps and i'm sure you can achieve that out of your gun if not very close to it. the lighter loads can be spit out at around 1300fps with the Cor-Bon 135 grainers. it just comes down to personal preference. try a few different loads and see which one lights your fire. the only ones i'm not too crazy about are the Golden Sabres and thats due to the muzzle flash. they have the most out of any of the loads i've tried. a good compromise are Federal's 155 grain Hydra-Shok's. they rate consistantly high and often the highest on the "Fuller index" if you're a believer in that.

I think 165 grain is the most popular in 40 S&W, following by 180 grain, then the 155 grain. 135 grain isn't loaded in any FMJ loads by major manufacturers.

Most cops seem to have given up the 180 and gone to the 165 GS. I use a 155 Hydra-shok.I recently bought some Corbon all copper DPX 140 gr. All the tests on this barnes bullet have been very favorable. In shooting woodchucks and feral dogs I find no difference between 45 and 40.

Thanks for the feedback. Should be picking up my G23 soon (waiting on Glock Days at my local shop) so I'll pick up a small variety and see how they shoot.

Have you tried the SA XD in 40. If you are near Taylor go to Top Gun or Westland Fireing Line(although Firering Line will push the Glock down your throat), and rent there range gun before you buy the Glock, both are nice guns but the XD has a grip similar to a 1911, just a thought. As to your ammo question I carry Win Ranger T 180gr.

Super Trucker

I have been to both those shops. I work near the Firing Line and shoot there frequently. Anyway, I have considered and handled the XD, I just can't seem to warm up to it. I haven't actully fired one though, so might be worth a rental as you suggest.

It was just a suggestion, I couldn't handle the G23 comfortably, so once I rented an XD I traded the G23 in for it.

Well, I'm probably going to be renting the G23 and G30 next week, so couldn't hurt to throw in the XD. Rental fees will come off the purchase price anyway.

Fella's;

I use the Winchester 180SXT's. Glock's don't fit my hand well at all. My son has Springfield's version of the HS2000 & I do not like the trigger. I like my H&K USPc - a lot.

On the few occasions I carry my CZ-75B in .40S&W, I load it with 155 gr Winchester Silvertips. The work well in my CZ and are very accurate. The only reason I chose this load was because I got them for $9.00 a box at Wally World. I bought 9 boxes.They also work well in my CZ RAMI and my
SIG 2340. Shot placement and reliability are more important than bullet weight,expansion, velocity,etc. IMHO. Your milage may vary.
