Thinking about a custom CZ 40P.

Wow, my first post in the gunsmithing section :D

You guys are going to think that I am nuts.

Some would say it is not worth the time or money but here are my thoughts.

I have a nice CZ 40P that I am in a whole $250.00 bucks. It is a shooter. I made a custom perfect fitting bushing and guide rod for it. I have the trigger to where it is almost perfect. I like this gun. It is a shooter and it holds very tight groups.

Maybe I have been hanging out with Eric Larsen too long, but now I have the itch to customize it further.

Here are my thoughts. I want to pick up a set of XS standard dot sights. They make them for the Colt Defender which is a perfect match for the 40 B slide that CZ used on the 40 P. Then I want to have (or do myself) the front and back straps stippled like Novak does. I attached some pictures of what I am talking about. I guess they do this with a 1/2 round bastard file and actually beat on it with a mallet. I also want the top of the slide stippled. Then I am going to have the whole thing hard chromed. Then possibly and action job although I am not sure that it needs that,

For me, this would be the ultmate CZ and in the end I would have maybe $600.00 in the gun which is what you might pay for many guns stock off the rack.

My question are. What do you folks think of my plan? Also with regard to the stippling, if I were to do it myself I would practice on several pieces of metal first. Then I need to know if I should strip of the poly coat before doing the stippling. Whoever hard chromes it (thinking about Advanced Plating and Weaponry) will have to strip it or bead blast it anyway so I wonder if I can just stipple it right through the poly coat.

People put that much money into customizing a Makarov so why not a CZ? Some people pay that much total for a base gun.

Since the frame is aluminum, I wonder what can really be done for finish options. My understanding is anytime you remove or damage the anodizing on aluminum you seriously compromize the durability. I'm probably wrong but that's what I recall reading.

Bottom line, it's yours to enjoy and it's your money. It would definitely be unique and an eye-catcher.

Go for it - yes, you spend too much time with Eric! But, Eric's CZ40 was gorgeous.

Sights came in the mail today :D

Now I have the weekend to decide if I will stipple it on my own or not. Then it is off to APW.

Oh and here is a thought.....

What if I just had them bead blast with course media the parts I was thinking of stippling? How would that turn out?

A rough bead blast would give it some texture but not nearly as dramatic as what's in the picture. I know nothing about the stippling technique so can't help you there. I also don't know much about hard chrome but they may or may not need to anodize or aneldize (sp?) the aluminum frame before doing the hard chrome.

If you had access to a media blaster you could try to do the blasting yourself and see if you like how it turned out before doing the stipling.

Any rate seems like a good project. Cheaper than my 10mm L-frame project by a WIDE margin :) I'm already $725 into it and still need the machining done. I'm guessing it will be a grand by the time I'm done.

Another option for a finish, which you might even be able to do yourself depending on your available tools, would be Gun-Kote. I'm happy enough with it that I'm refinishing my Delta Elite and Desert Eagle with it tomarrow.

That finish looks nice Black Snowman. I have thought about projects using gun-kote. I will probably re-do my SAR-1 AK with that one day.

I am going to practice some stippling this weekend on some scrap metal then decide where to go with it.
