So I picked up my new 3" SP101 .357 mag today. My first wheelgun so I'm exicited when I picked it up. I get it home to disassemble it to clean it and I can't remove the hammer pivot. Are there any special techniques I should use, b/c I tried for 20 minutes to pop that little bugger out. Thanks for any help.:banghead:

You are talking about the pin that goes through the frame & hammer right?
It should just come right out. I usually pry mine out using my fingernail under the flat portion on the right hand side.
Dumb question: you did take the grips off, right?

Are you saying what I think your saying? I'm a dumb redneck from the south. :scrutiny: I'm just kidding, but yes I did have the grips off. I actually used a jewelers screwdriver to pry it off, but still no luck. Anymore suggestions. :D

You're probably going to want to call Ruger, somethin's wrong here.

Be sure it is unloaded. Remove grips. Cock hammer. There is a lil hole in the hammer strut. Place a small nail etc. in the hole-slowly lower the hammer. That ties the hammer spring up and releases pressure on the hammer. THEN the hammer pivot pin should be easily removed from the frame.

If you don't capture the mainspring, you'll never get the pivot pin out (and if you do, parts will fly everywhere ... rapidly).

The pivot pin in my 101 is a little snug, but a light tap with a mallet and wood dowel is all it takes to get it started.

Haha, that's funny, I just picked up a 3" .357 SP-101 yesterday as well.

If you and I are visualizing the same part, you should be able to drift it out utilizing a soft drift, brass ext and a soft mallet, although it it suprizing, because mine does not fit tightly at all mine just slides right out.

Very, very nice. I am jealous.

I have the tritium bead on mine and it really helps more than I thought it would. I shot the gun as a backup in a night combat class and was very pleased.

Charles S, are those 125gr. full power Remingtons?

If so, do you know how LOUD :uhoh: they are? Especially out of a 2" barrel where they lose so much of their velocity anyways.

No, those are CorBon 110 gt +P+ 38s. I have tried the 125 grain loads from most of the manufacturers, they all have an impressive concussion.

The velocity out of a 2 inch barrel is not as bad as most of the gun mags would have you believe. I have chronographed the Federal load at 1290 in my gun.

I really don't even like the 125 gr Golden Saber medium velocity load because it has more flash than I like.

My personal favorite 357 load is the now discontinued CorBon 115 gr Sierra loaded to 1350 out of the SP101. I have a stash of that load, it is very accurate and fairly pleasant to shoot.

Unfortunately for me, the noise with anything more than a 125gr. .357 Golden Saber out of a 3" or shorter barrel is just too much for me (even at the outdoor range sometimes).

Sometimes I load my short barreled guns with heavier grain loads because of the lower noise level and greater power (per noise level).
