Kinda leaning Para, my friend(and his friend) has a Nighthawg and really likes it. Thinking about the Stealth. Or should I get a base model Colt then add a beavertail, trigger and release myself?

If I were in your situation, I'd pick up a Colt Government and call it done.

In fact, I think I WAS in your situation. I picked up a Kimber, and then a GI Springfield. Now, I'm yearning for a Colt. Get the Colt. Anything else is probably just delaying the inevitable and will cost you more money in the long run.

Greeting's All-

Be advised that Para's have improved their quality control. This is
particullary true to the 1911 single stack LTC and SSP models.
I recently examined both very closely, and too be honest I believe
them to be as good as the new roll mark Colt's. If their is a downside
to the Para 1911's, it lies with their magazines. Priced at only $599,
you can afford to add a couple of Wilson 47D's to improve upon those
from Para. I strongly recommend trying a Para!

Best Wishes,

i'd go para, years ago i bought one, and had a mag floorplate split. i called and asked for a new floorplate and they took my address. a few days later i got a package with 2 14 rounders and another mag with an extended competition floorplate. oh they also sent me a floorplate and follower and springs to repair the one i had. not to mention a really nice apology for the failure. super folks.

A Colt is seldom a bad decision. Most of the new ones are very, very good. The ones in the late 80's could be erratic, but they are usually fixable.

I have four para's three are great and the forth will be
I have pre external extractors in P13 limited, a P12 LDA and a 6-45 LDA

I also have a P14-45 that got butchered by someone and I am making it right. The feed ramp on the barrel had been messed with and several other things done to fix it not feeding. It was at the gunsmiths for ages according to the dealer whom I trust and he said the owner just wanted to get rid of it but wanted the history known so the shop owner did not loose his reputation. It came with 6 high cap magazines and some parts too including grips and case. I took it home and realized 5 of the six hi caps were USA branded, and had funky shaped feedlips of thin material. I borrowed two factory hi caps from a friend and they worked fine. So I have ordered a few new factory mags and a new barrel and hope this will be just fine when finished.

I know that there are people who love to slam Para's but at the two ranges I frequent, Para's have a good rep for working as rental guns with lots of rounds and little problems. and i take that as high praise.

I used to be a Colt basher until I bought a NRM Gov't model from WildAlaska. It's beautiful and flawless.

But Para's are my love. I have 4 currently and had one other. The LTC in production now is calling my name....I fear I won't lsat much longer.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Para. But if you want to spend more adding to the Colt, it is your money.

Colt is the finest .45 acp you can buy. They have a Series 70 model that I'm thinking I will buy next. Just my opinion of course. They are quality.

i had a para p12 for a short while. i liked how it felt in my hand, but if i was going to carry it, i'd have wanted a lot of customization. round all the sharp edges, get a fitted bushing, have a guide rod put in, and a few other things.

i've since had a chance to hold and dryfire a para with the lda trigger, and i gotta say i really liked it! now it looks like you can get most para models from the factory with it. i'm not estatic about their new extractor, but every gun rag says it works.

get the para if you dont care what the 1911 snobs think. :neener:

The Para LTC got an excellent write-up and recommendation in Gun Tests mag a few months ago (www.gun-tests.com). Because of that I put it on my next purchase shortlist.

First let me say, GO COLT!!!!. Now that I got that out. NRM stands for New Roll Mark. The older 1991A1s had a big roll mark on the slide that read 1991A1 . The new ones say Colts Government Model45 Automatic Caliber.
Government Model refers to it being the the full sized 5" barreled model. Has the mil-spec grip safety andhammer. Doesn't come with snag free sights, but they are of 3 dot high visibility. It is a great product.

Got both...Colt Gold Cup National Match is my favorite 45 for range work. My Para Ordnance p12-45 is my CCW. A 45 for every occassion...

Even if you choose to buy the Para now, you'll still end up buying the Colt later. Why? Because you wanted a good pistol with plenty of tradition. Nuff said.

Not to say that Colt is the only game in town. I freely admit that there are other good 1911 pattern pistols out there,

BUT

If it ain't a Colt it's just a copy. :neener:

Where does Kimber fit in the equation?

My father in law has a Colt Government Model 1911 (with something called a Speed lug and a match barrel that one of the smiths in the army installed for him) he purchased for $45 when he was first commissioned in the army. He's carried it with him everywhere. I currently have a glock, but he's convinced me to get a 1911 and ditch the tupperware. I was looking at Kimber (Custom II and Royal II) and was wondering what the real difference was between the two and how they match up to his Colt or Para or even Springfield.

I'll be using it for day to day carry but I also like to target shoot with it and want something reasonably accurate but also operational out of the box.

Any help is appreciated.

If you look for a Kimber, I would honestly try to find a Classic Custom instead of the Classic Custom II. I have experienced trouble with two different II Series Kimbers and read of many others.

On the other hand, I am a Colt man. These things just shoot. I shot my "loose" Colt side by side with a "fitted right" Kimber Classic Custom I. The Colt ran circles around it.
