I'll be spending the summer in Denver and had a couple questions.

Where can't you carry? Reading on PAcking.org it basically said K-12 schools and buildings with weapons checks.

With reciprocity do all I need to do is carry my Oklahoma liscense?

Thanks

I am not a lawyer, but I do live in Colorado.

If Colorado reciprocates with Oklahoma then you should be technically legal.

However, last I heard the city of Denver is fighting a court battle to allow it to nullify the state's CCW provisions. As you can guess, the city is run by people who are less than charitable to those who carry. So while technically it may be legal, in the real world, watch out.

More info can be found at http://www.packing.org

Thanks for the info. I knew Denver was fighting with the state maybe they'll have all that resolved by May.

I wouldn't bet a nickel on that proposition even if I were a wagering man.

Denver accepts CCW permits, although whether Oklahoma's is recognized, I couldn't tell you. If Denver thought it could weasel out of accepting permits it would; instead, it's trying to insist on its ban on so-called "assault weapons," open carry, and assorted other provisions of the state's preemption law.

It'd be worth your while to check in at http://rmgo.org from time to time for the latest news.

Check the packing.org news page for CO about the court decision showing 3 state laws Denver was ordered to comply with and 3 state laws Denver is allowed to deviate from. We don't know if the attorney general will appeal.

State law says a pistol in a car is not considered "concealed" and needs no permit. Denver supposedly must allow a pistol in the car with a permit. I heard from a local nonDenver LEO that Denver officers are frequently arresting CWPermittees found carrying during traffic stops, contrary to the court ruling. Permittees eventually win in court, but the policy appears to be maximum hassle. I carry outside Denver wherever it's legal. I usually don't enter Denver, but I would put the pistol in the trunk if I need to go into Denver.

Unfortunatley I won't have the option of avoiding Denver. Will be working downtown.

Oklahoma has reciprocity according to packing.org

How are officers finding out about the weapons? According to packing.org CO is not a notify the police state.

Where are no-gos for carrying?

No-gos are federal and state buildings, courts and such...and schools. That's about it now. No mention of liquor stores, parks or anything else these days.

Personally, I would carry. The state has reciprocity with OK. What more is there? When I am in CO I carry everywhere unless I'm going into one of the above-listed buildings.

When issuing new CWPs, most sheriffs enter the permittee into the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) database, the main purpose of which is to log criminals.

When a police officer radios for a license check, via CCIC the officer knows if the registered owner is a CWPermittee. State law does not require the stopped driver to notify the officer of a CWP and concealed pistol, but as you can see, the officer is notified of the permit by other means.

This only applies to CWPs issued in CO, of course.

Your local non-Denver LEO doesn't know what he's talking about.

I lived and carried in Denver for several years, even before shall-issue and preemption, and I never had a problem. IMO, the anecdotes about Denver are blown way out of proportion. If you have a valid permit, carry in Denver. You will be committing no crime.

Some do; some don't. I think only a minority of sheriffs enter CCW holders into the criminal data base.

I can vouch for Morgan.

The DP are not looking to harass law abiding citizens.

I have never had one iota of trouble from any of the Denver PD. I'm a fourth generation Coloradoan. I ran a business in down town Denver for years.

Pay attention to the rules and welcome to Colorado!

Did I read it correctly- that one used to be able to carry on school campuses, but it got repealed? Weapons in one's "own dwelling", such as an on-campus apartment are okay though, right?

Oh, you can check out all the laws on CO's own website http://cbi.state.co.us/ic/relatedstatutes.htm
