I told myself "no more guns," but...

I told myself "no more guns," but *somehow* my name ended up on a 4473 yellow form today, and there is a new Mossberg Maverick 88 in my truck. I don't know how that happened!
I got an "Undertaker" super full turkey choke (I think that was the notation) to go with it. The gun came with a modified choke. I read the manual concerning shot size, patterning, etc. It said nothing about slugs and it got me thinking. Can I fire a slug with any kind of choke, or just cylinder bore? I have a Mossberg 500 with cylinder bore that I have fired slugs from before, but I have never used a gun with a choke. I am planning to just use this gun for turkey (copper plated shot), but I just want to know for sure, just in case.

I'm sorry? What is this "no more guns"?
We are unfamiliar with this strange concept of which you speak.
No more guns means you’re either completely broke, living in a cardboard box and eating left over ramen noodles (cold) but you’d still have a mouse gun tucked in your sock or...
...you're dead.
:D :neener:

AirWolf,
I am a poor, poor, poor college student that only works four hours a week. On that, I should be able to afford one gun every three months or so. I did in fact make that statement, but I guess I never though about it. I do not know what I was thinking. And to think I answered "No" to the question about mental defects. I need to snap out of it!

Just pulling your leg a bit :D
Yes, the cold hard realities of life sometimes intrude, don't they? And it usually sucks when they do.

You bet they do! At least I have two ranges that I like where I can shoot all day for $3.50 or $5.00 depending on where I go.

I was a poor student for four years - good practice for the real world.
To answer your question, slugs can be safely fired in Full choke shotguns, but I'd advise Modified as a maximum for accuracy and possibly safety. Old guns may have a very tight Full, so no blanket endorsements.
I would never use slugs in any choke tighter than Full. Good way to shorten your barrel and endanger folks around you.
Several friends have the "Undertaker" choke tubes and give rave reviews.

Nuts,
I don't know about Mossberg but, Browning recommends not to shoot slugs from their Full choke guns due to barrel damage. From Modified chokes to more open chokes slugs are fine. I believe most over the counter slug boxes have that printed on them too don't they, or am I remembering that wrong?

Marshall, I just checked boxes from Winchester, Kent and Brenneke. No mention of choke on the boxes.
The Brenneke box specifically warned against putting them in your mouth. :scrutiny:
I do remember words to that effect on the old pumpkin ball loads.

Solid round "Punkin" balls do not swage down in chokes as well as the more modern Forster style, which were developed for just that reason.
By and large, MOST slugs can be fired through MOST chokes, but extremes are to be avoided.
Slugs through Modifed chokes are safe, but oft it's not the most accurate setup.
As for the "Undertaker",it's for a special purpose. Leave it at that, IMO...
Also, some years ago I promised Wonderful Wife, (AKA the Permanent Head of the Budget Committee here) that I'd own ten guns or less. I've kept that promise. The rest belong to the kids!

Dave,
I blew that one out of the water a long time ago. I have twenty-something now. I have officialy reached the point where I have forgotten about some guns. I put them all around my room and my hobby room. I have caught myself "discovering" ones I had forgotten about.
My Maverick came with a modified choke, so I will try a few slugs through that. I did not think the Undertaker would accept a slug, but I was unsure about the others. My Undertaker is 0.665", so that is a difference of 55/1000 (0.72-0.665). That's a pretty big difference!

Sounds like my friend Doug,SN. I ran across him shooting a nice old Remington Model 17(Same design as the Ithaca 37) in 20 gauge. He mentioned he had forgotten he had one and ran across it while looking for another shotgun.
Wife says I have more guns than the average Central American revolution.
Dunno if shooting a slug through the Undertaker is safe, but it's almost certainly not accurate. I'd leave it alone, in your shoes.
As for that Maverick, BA/UU/R....
