Kurita gun safe bill goes to next committee

By MARDEE ROBERTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

State Sen. Rosalind Kurita, D-Clarksville, expects it may be two weeks before the Senate's Finance Committee will review her bill to eliminate the state sales taxes charged to people who buy gun safes.

Kurita introduced the bill to promote gun safety without restricting the rights of responsible gun owners, she said.

A tax subcommittee discussed the legislation Tuesday morning, then voted to send it to the Finance Committee without recommendation, Kurita said.

"They were concerned about a reduction in the sales tax collections," Kurita said. "What I now am going to do is to show this will be a small amount of money in the state budget.

Hooray for the Land of Orange! Hope it becomes law without being tagged with any mandatory ownership provisions.

Kurita is my state senator. She cannot be trusted. More than likely, she has a mandatory storage bill waiting in the wings.

My last phone conversation with her abruptly ended with her slamming the phone down because I insisted that she give me a simple 'yes' or 'no' as to whether she would support the proposed [now defeated] state income tax. Even though it had already been declared by the Tenn. Supreme Court to be unconstitutional, she wouldn't go on the record as opposing it.

Like a typical Democrat, she likes playing both sides of the fence as long as she can get away with it.

Nevertheless, I like this bill, and so does our leading lobbying organization, The Tennessee Firearms Association.

That would be good for you down there. I was in the Smoky Mountains in October and bought some knives and the sales tax was 9.5%. At least you don't have an income tax yet although I hear they are trying to push one. I thought the sales tax in Los Angeles was bad but Tennessee has it beat by a good ways.
