The best solution I've ever found for Smith & Wesson rear sights is to take it off, throw it away, and get one from the good folks at http://www.millettsights.com

Millet sights are stronger, more finely adjustable, and available in a variety of heights and rear face finishes. Cheap? No. Better? Much!

You can get a replacement white outline blade and the corrosponding adjustment screw and nut from S&W.

You must replace the screw and retaining nut because you will destroy them removing the old blade.

Make sure you get the correct blade for your barrel length.
And follow the factory instructions for "staking" the nut in place.

You can also replace the entire S&W sight assembly with one with a white outline blade, if you wish. It's not economically the most efficient route, but it will work fine.

I recently put a Millett WO rear on a 625 and was disappointed to find that the Millett WO blades have a relatively shallow notch. I haven't decided whether I am going to go back to the original S&W sight or not. I like the white bar under the notch on the Millett, but the shallower notch is kinda driving my possibly feeble brain a little crazy.

Here is a nice replacment Blade for S&W adjustable sights

(Cut and paste the whole thing in your browser,if needed)

You will also need a new windage screw to install it

What's the deal with the widths of the rear sights. I see a .110 and a .125. Does the smaller notch make the front sight fill up the notch? How would he stock S&W blade notch compare to the .110 and the .125? Can anyone measure for me? I'm needing a N frame 8-3/8 rear sight blade and am thinking of the one Brownells sells, the Weigand. Would prefer a white outline but am having trouble finding one. Need one for a 1982 mfg revolver. Has the single mounting screw. Anyone know where to find one? Thinking of replacing the whole rear instead of just the blade. My windage screw broke!

If you are happy with what you have, just replace the windage screw and nut. The differance in knotch width is the wider the knotch, the more daylight you see aound the front sight. I find with older eyes,it is much easier to center the front sight with more light coming around it.Whatever you choose,Brownells will most likley have it.

Millet makes a nice replacment sight that you can get with a white outline. It gives you a nice flat larger rear sight to look through. I think your 80's vintage gun is a drop in, if not, you get the one with out the hole drilled and drill it to match your frame. It's in the Brownell's catalog #60,page 340.
