M1 Garand/Quiz/Hard/new

Hi all,
On Nov. 29, 1941 SA had done testing on a part of the M1 Garand Rifle that would almost double its life. The file was sent to Industrian Service, Small Arms, Div's, Attent: Engineering for approval. Remember, the US will be at war within a month. What was this part?
