January 8 MMM Welcoming Day
Membership Letter for all but Larimer County

Happy New Year!

Thanks to all who showed up to help stuff our membership letters.
For those of you not in our database, the letter is enclosed.
...

Remember to mark your calendars for MMM Welcoming Day at the State
Capitol, January 8 at 9:15 am in the basement snackroom. Wear pink,
black, MMM t-shirts or those honoring lost ones to gun violence. No
posters are allowed. Take a photo and turn it into a button or
necklace.

...
Dear Million Mom March members and supporters,

2002 was a very busy year for all concerned. The Million Mom March
merged with the Brady Organization but maintains it's own identity.
This merger gives the Million Mom March organization a much stronger
voice, access to resources and gives us guidance on how to focus on
our goals.

The gun lobbyists introduced and tried unsuccessfully to pass
several "Concealed Weapon" bills through the Colorado Senate. One
such bill HB1410, introduced as a "compromise" would have made it
legal for concealed weapons' permit holders, twenty-one years and
older, to carry concealed weapons into libraries, universities, sport
complexes, churches, shopping malls, government offices, and all
other public spaces. It was a close call. But fortunately HB 1410
died in Appropriations. We fought hard, along with the Interfaith
Alliance, PTA, Police Chiefs, Domestic Abuse, Women's groups and
other gun control groups, and used all means and resources available
to defeat this bill. We supported a Safe Storage bill which
unfortunately did not even make it out of committee.

The November election results were disappointing; we are going to
have to fight even harder for "Sensible Gun Laws" at the state and
federal level.

"THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR GRANDCHILDREN, YOUR NEIGHBOR'S
CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS ARE IN YOUR HANDS"

THE DENVER CHAPTER OF THE MILLION MOM MARCH ORGANIZATION NEEDS YOUR
HELP AND SUPPORT

Be a part of and help us to:

☺ Mobilize the vast majority of Americans who want
sensible gun laws.
☺ Support the Brady Law that requires criminal checks
for all gun sales.
☺ Help law enforcement protect public safety with
stronger firearm record-keeping laws.
☺ License all handgun owners and register all handguns.
☺ Implement consumer protection safety standards for
guns and better oversight of the gun industry.

Support our goals by:

☺ Completing and returning the enclosed membership form.
☺ Encouraging your family, friends, neighbors and
others to join the Million Mom March organization.
☺ Attending the Denver Chapter Million Mom March
meetings and community outreach activities.
☺ Educating your friends, neighbors and acquaintances
about gun issues/current legislation via general conversations,
flyers.
☺ Contacting your representatives and letting them know
of your concerns and views of the "gun epidemic" sweeping our country.
:( Watching the legislature for any action that will
weaken existing laws and introduce dangerous concealed weapon laws.
☺ Promoting PAX programs: ASK (if there's a gun where
your child plays) to parents and SPEAK UP (if there's a gun at
school) to students.
☺ Helping us to raise funds to send representatives to
the proposed "2004 Million Mom March" in Washington, D.C. We would
encourage as many "Moms" as possible to attend this important rally.
Make your plans now.
☺ Sending us your ideas.
☺ Arranging for qualified speakers to give talks at
your local church groups, young people's groups, neighborhood
gathering, sports meetings etc. on the human and financial costs of
gun violence and the Million Mom March organizations' aims and plans
for the future.

Join us as we welcome our legislators on opening day of the new
session on January 8, 2003. We plan to meet in the basement snack
room at 9:15 a.m. Wear black or pink and your MMM t-shirts or one
honoring a loved one lost to gun violence. A press conference is
being planned. Call our number (303) 505 - 2134 for update
information as the time grows closer or e-mail us at

I've forgot to send in my dues!
I must say I agree with this:
"Sensible Gun Laws"
And this:
"THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR GRANDCHILDREN, YOUR NEIGHBOR'S CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS ARE IN YOUR HANDS"
Now if I could just get MMM to lobby for a Ma Deuse in every home, along with enough ammo to enjoy, er, become proficient in it's use. Sounds like a "Sensible Gun Law" to me.:D

I hate to have to say this, because I loathe and detest what the MMM's stand for, but we have to acknowledge that many - probably most - of their members truly BELIEVE this nonsense. They move only in their own shallow, limited circles, hearing nothing else but viewpoints that agree with their own. They have become a self-perpetuating movement, a self-fulfilling prophecy, if you like.

We won't get through to them by calling them idiots, and we can't debate them logically and rationally because they won't listen. The only way some of them will be converted - tragically, too late - is after they've had an encounter where a gun, skilfully wielded, might have saved them, but because it wasn't available to them, did not.

I've always said that the most powerful argument for RKBA that I know is to let someone walk through the maximum-security prison where I work, and listen to inmate conversations, and read the listed photo file with details of what these outwardly-innocent-appearing inmates have done to land up in a place like that. I reckon after that experience, most people, on leaving the gates, will stop the first armed citizen they see to kiss his/her gun!

If not a Max security prison, have them visit an OR while surgery being performed on a victim. Victim of GS, knife, rape....course maybe seeing the deceased as a donor would make a more pronounced impression...victims families...combo of all above...not a pretty sight.

One of the saddest/truest comments I think I've ever read.

But some of these ladies have seen the bad things guns have done in their lives. (yeah, I know. Don't even go there, as we already agree. I'm just making noise here)

No arguement, Peter, et al, none from me, but they have had their lives altered through the misuse of firearms. Thye'll not likely be swayed till they have to come face-to-face with the cold, hard slap of reality against their own face.

Kathleen Hopkins, the first & former head of CO MMM, is a gun owner herself. Has a shotgun at the least is tries to be "reasonable" in her quest. Reading her stuff, you'd wonder why she'd want to have anything at all to do with the MMM-tripe.

Many private conversations with her - yada & still, she's adamant about the MMM "thought process."

& actually, she was somewhat reachable. Her replacement/s are true-believers & not to be reached forevermore, amen.

A printed editorial rebutal I made in the Denver (com)Post mentioned Kathleen's plea for a return to the Olden Days of Denver, when we could all feel safe ...... (sigh) My closing was "Kathleen's not afraid of guns, she's afraid of you." (that closing wasn't printed as such - oh well, as it was the heart of the matter)

These folk are on a mission, will not be swayed with any amount of logic.

& too funny somehow. When anything squirrely comes their way, the first thing they'll do is call 911 & pray for a quick resolution by: (drum roll! ta-da!) Men With Guns.

uh-huh ......

...we have to acknowledge that many - probably most - of their members truly BELIEVE this nonsense. -- Preacherman And we have to remember that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

No matter what the basis of their belief, whether for the "good of the children" or the desire to disarm the US population, that belief is faulty in the extreme.

These folk are on a mission, will not be swayed with any amount of logic. -- labgradeIn short, they are willfully stupid...possessing fact and ignoring it. The time has long passed when we should "compromise" by resorting to this: :banghead: We don't have the luxury of waiting for the entire cabal to become victims of violent crime because self-defense with the best possible tool was rejected.

Like Zander says:

. . .they are willfully stupid...possessing fact and ignoring it.

Beliefs like theirs are generally only possible in very, very tame times. During most of human history, mature males have routinely carried arms. And for good reason.

Those unable or unwilling to use arms have very often been harnessed, used and driven across the land like beasts.

They are not merely foolish. . .they are beneath contempt.

You are right 45-auto.

It is a testament to the relative safety of most of the country that people even hold thier position in any kind of significant numbers.

These people most certainly would not like the world they so desperately long for.

They indicated to me the following:
The Jan 8 event will be characterized as a press conference, even though pre-opening activities such as handing out flowers to incoming legislators and some sign carrying is scheduled. This was to reduce expectations from the press that words like “demonstration” or “protest” might raise, in light of a minimal (about 20 total) expected turnout. Demeanor is to be very quiet and reserved to form a contrast with the expected noisy and confrontational pro-gunnies.
9:30 – Placards in the parking lot, near the entrance. Dress in Black or pink. Pin on a picture of a shooting victim. (I bet nobody wears a picture of Israel Mena)
9:50 – Put away placards and move indoors in grim silence. Theme = “We come in Peace”
They reaffirm among themselves, that they do not want to take guns away, but to promote responsible ownership. Certain people should not be allowed concealed carry. Suggested list included spouse abusers, crack addicts, and off-duty cops. They want laws that a majority of people can agree (with them) on.

So When's our planning meeting? Or are they going to be there all by themselves. Note that, with the exception of the cops, the proposed list includes nobody who'd not otherwise be debarred, so I guess they're with us now.
:D
