Just curious if any of you have experience with the Black-T finish on a handgun.. I'm interested to see how it holds up to wear/cleaning, as well as if it can be applied to stainless steel.

Like any of the black finishes, they high points will show holster wear. It does scratch relatively easily. I have not yet heard of a black finish that wears like hard chrome.

I'd leave your stainless gun as is.

I've got a rifle finished in Black-T. No solvent problems, no scratches (yet). Best friend has several HGs finished in Black-T and he's happy.

My take is that when it was a $150 process it was a good value. IIRC, it's over 2 bills now. Not such a good value. APW will hard chrome a HG for about $125, which is what I had done to my Kimber when the bluing started going south.

Well, being that the gun's stainless already, hard chrome seems a little redundant.. I was more into the idea of a stealth black revolver, rather than extreme hardness/lubricity.

I may see if CobraCoat is up to the task, as well.. people seem really happy with Tripp.

MMcall: I strongly suspect CobraCoat will be like Wilson's Armor-Tuff (which I also have experience with). It will show holster wear at the high points. Maybe a bit more scratch resistant than Black-T and a bit less lubricity.

I'm unaware of ANY dark finish that does not wear in a holster. Boron Carbide looked very exciting for a while, but it seems as though it is not ready for prime time.

Holster wear isn't really an issue, this is more of a pet project gun, not a carry piece (6" ported S&W 629). Lubricity would be less of an issue as well, with less areas of friction than an auto.

The whole issue of "will it stick to stainless" is what's concerning me most.

So I'm talking to this total-engineer-type science gee-whiz-for-real ON THE PHONE about ammo and then we're talking about 1911's and suddenly we're talking about gun finishes and finishes in general and Black-T in specific.
Then I looked into the universe........

Me? I'm going to try Birdsong's Black T on my next gun-coating.
